Fantastic Find
Driving around Salzburg and we just came upon it. I had read all of the recommended accommodations, and remembered good things about it.
They could not have been any nicer or more helpful. We stayed in the triple on the top floor and it was clean and spacious. Location was perfect for walking around the town. I would recommend the Hotel Trumer-Stube to everyone.

Good Location, but small room and very basic
Stayed there one night in May 2004. I had agreed to pay more (96 Euros for the room) to get a bigger and quiet room. It turned out that I did get a quiet room but also very very small on the top floor. The facilities are of a basic pension. There is no hairdryer. Breakfast is not included (8 Euros per head if you are interested). There is an elevator. The managing lady was professional but not particularly friendly. Location is excellent as it is about 3 minutes from Mozartplatz and around the same time to Mirabell Gardens.
I would recommend staying elsewhere (a hotel with more comfort facilities) even if it's away from the center. Salzburg is very very small that you can either walk 15 minutes or take a one or two stop bus ride which was very convenient. When we left to go to the train station, we walked less than 5 minutes to the bus stop, caught the bus, and were at the train station within 5 more minutes. 96 Euros is not cheap for a pension--why not stay at a modern hotel for less!
Unique Quality: Great location, very small rooms, expensive for the price.

How to find good accomodation
I found my accomodation -- Pension Trumer Stube (which I was very pleased with) -- by checking out Virtual Tourist and www.salzburg.info. The latter site is filled with pensions, B&Bs, hotels of all prices, etc.

STAY IN A CENTRAL LOCATION
Since Salzburg is a very small intimate town that can be walked entirely on foot, I highly recommend staying in a centrally located hotel or pension. Because Salzburg is a small town, chances are you're only staying a day or two or three. While it is small, it is filled with tons of great sites, restaurants and touristy things to see and do. So, you don't want to waste any time commuting back and forth to a hotel. Plus, late at night when you want a snack, the best chances of finding an open restaurant is downtown (altstadt) so you'll want to stay within walking distance. I highly recommend Pension Trumer Stube for its very central location and great rates.

Pension Trumer-Stube
We stayed two nights and talk about location, location, location for a great price. There are a lot of cheap guesthouses and pensions on Moosstrasse, but that is a 15 minute bus ride away. Trumer Stube is a one minute walk to the main river bridge and 2 minutes to Mozart's birthplace and 1 minute to Gasthof Alter Fuchs restaurant. Plus, you can't beat the value... the price for that location is great. Highly recommended.
