A great place to stay

This is a fun and huge hostel (part of Hostelling International). Unfortunately I have to admit that the only downside to it is the fact that the beds aren’t terrific. They’re not that bad, but they are not that great either. The rooms all have bunk beds in them, and well, in the room I was in I had a top bunk and had to use a chair to get up and down as I didn’t trust the pegs (which I think were supposed to be a ladder) as being safe to use. Just try to get a bottom bed and you’ll be right. Each bed has its own large locker (with key).

But apart from that I did have a great stay here, the people that worked here were especially friendly and I meet quite a few nice people in the dorms. People of all ages stayed at this hostel. A lot of young backpackers, but families and older people (than me) as well.

Unique Quality: Great things about his hostel are the fact that it has the best view from reception (its front doors), you look up and right in front of you is Hohensalzburg Fortress. The reception area is also nice, there are plenty of tables inside and out and you can buy snacks, meals and alcohol from here. Every night they play the movie ‘The Sound Of Music’ on a large flat-screen TV in the common room (as the movie was filmed in and around Salzburg). Also from reception you can buy tickets for tours around Salzburg at the cheapest price in town. You can book for tours like ‘The Sound Of Music’ and the ‘Salt Mine Tour’, plus others. Or if you want to see the city yourself, hire one of the hostels bikes.

This hostel also has the best breakfast I have ever had at a hostel (and better than some hotels I’ve stayed at). So make sure you get up so you can choose from the selection of: toast, cereals, yogurt, eggs, ham, cheese, rolls, tea, coffee, juice and even miso soup.

There is also a laundry, but when I was there only one washer and one dryer were working. Luckily I didn’t have to wait long to use them (You can get washing powder and ‘special’ coins to operate the machines from reception). They have a few computers with the internet and it costs to use it per half hour, you pay at reception.

Salzburg's loudest hostel

This hostel is located pretty much as far from the hauptbahnhof as you can get...though the location itself isn't all that bad. Just a very short busride to any of the sights. This is a very big hostel and it is very popular with school groups--making it quite loud with all the pre-teen shreaking and door slamming. The dorm rooms are a good size, with each bed getting it's own locker (lock provided). Sheets included, towels are not. Bathrooms are single-sex and shared for the entire floor, but they are clean. Breakfast is included, but it is standard YHA fare so nothing to write home about. There is a small bar in the lobby, 4 computers for internet access, and lots of sitting room so it's easy to meet people. 'The Sound of Music' is shown on the TV every night.
If you're looking for a party hostel, this is not it.

Unique Quality: You can see Hohensalzburg from here.

Not just for yoofs.....

As with all the hostels I have stayed at in Austria over the years it was clean, cheap and easy to find!

Unique Quality: A chance to meet other people from across the world in a small dorm, listen to them snore all night and still want to talk with them over breakfast.

JGH Hostel...

We stayed at the JGH Hostel and it was great!

We paid about AS500 for a double room without an ensuite. Breakfast and sheets were included in the price...

Unique Quality: We had to walk a bit to get there but it was nice and quite. The cleaners accidentially took our towels while cleaning and since we couldn't find them in the laundry we were given new towels. When we got back to Australia the staff at the hostel had posted our (expensive) towels home. :) Very nice of them!!
