Before heading to Salzburg, I found this web site very helpful:

The Hohensalzburg Fortress dominates the city view and is worth a peek. You can either take the funicular or brave the hike up the steep path. At the top you will find a museum, guided tours and a cafe with one of the prettiest views in the world!
In the evening, if you are inclined, go to the marionette theatre for a show. This is not a kids' show: it's real Mozart opera. My mother, cousin and I had planned to go to the marionette theatre after a day of touring the city. We ran short on time and realized we would not have time for dinner before the show. So we stopped off at the local Julius Meinl for some bread, fruit, wine and cheese so that we could munch back at our room after the show.
We found our seats near the front of the theatre and sat & chatted until the curtain went up, with our grocery bag next to me on the floor. As the show went on, I could hear the people in back of us sniffing - and my mom and my cousin too. My mother leaned over and said, 'I think the cheese kind of smells.' As I was closer to the door with a slight draft coming from it, I didn't smell anything. 'Are you sure?' I asked, as I opened the bag for a whiff. . . Just then, what could easily have been a green cloud erupted from our grocery bag. The smell of very ripe cheese wafted out and drifted slowly toward the back of the room. As the show went on, we noticed that the people directly behind us had moved, despite their excellent seat! It was all we could do to smother our laughter (and the smell) for the rest of the show!
Afterward, we went back to our room with our groceries and had a very nice snack!
Salzburg Tip

To me the architecture of Saltzburg appealed very much. Many houses had wall paintings on their walls, not to mention the beautiful flower arrangements under the windows, narrow shopping avenues and decorated water fountains.

Go to an Austria Tabak. There are so many that you can usually stand in one and see the next from where you are! They're good for postcards, stamps, little souvenirs, and many sell bus tickets (which are cheaper than on the bus or from the machines).
Language
by Marpessa
In Salzburg the people are very polite and all the people that I met spoke English (although some fluently, others only a bit). However, I think that when visiting another country you should try a few words in their language. So here are some basics in German:
Hello/Hi - Guten Tag/Hallo
Goodbye/Bye - Auf Widersehen/Tschuss
Good Morning - Guten Morgen
Good Evening - Guten Abend
Good Night - Guten Nacht
Do you speak English? - Sprechen Sie Englisch?
Yes/No - Ja/Nein
Please - Bitte
Thanks - Danke
