Carlton Hotel Budapest: Great location
The room is spacious, there's coffee and tea-making facilities, breakfast was nice, furniture is attractive, staff - reception and cleaning ladies - are great, and location, location, location. I can't think of anything to complain about.
Well, it's memorable to stay in this hotel because it's near the most popular tourist spots. And one has to climb the stairs (not too many) which is quite unique. I had a backpack so I had nothing to worry about. The hotel has a garage so I suppose there's an elevator that goes straight up the hotel, but you'll have to check that out.

Zur Goldener Ente: Excellent
This is a wonderful, traditional family owned Gasthaus right in the heart of the old town.
It’s quiet, comfortable and welcoming. Our room was spotless.
Breakfast was a continental buffet - excellent. Served from 7.30-10 am.
I wasn’t paying, but I know from booking that we got a mid week off season deal, of €100 per night for 2 nights, bed & breakfast. Excellent value.
We also ate in the restaurant on the first night - ideal. I’ve written a separate tip on that.

Hotel Itzlinger Hof: Good lodging
Spacious room with couch, writing desk and side table, modern clean bathroom. Like they say on their website, it's the traditional Austrian sense of well being, combined with modern design.
Next to bus stop, in a quiet part of the town, direct connection by bus to the main railway station. Small private parking lot.

Pension Jahn: Good enough for a short stay
This pension owned by an oriental family is conveniently located near the train station. The room came with a set breakfast of bread, jam and tea (or coffee). The rooms where clean, large enough for 2 beds and the bathroom had hot water. We didn't spend much time at the hotel, so it was good enough, considering how affordable it was. I noticed most of the guests were oriental visitors. The owners spoke good English. They were very pleasant and very kind.

Camping Kasern: Ok campground
This is a nice campground. The facilities are good and you can hire bungalow tents and small caravans. The location is far from scenic but there is a large store nearby where you can buy camping gas etc. I wouldn't return here as the location is not as scenic as Camping Schloss Aigen.

Bed & Breakfast Villaverde: Magical Villaverde in Salzburg
First of all I would like to say we were aceppted with great hospitality and it was nice experience to stay in bed&breakfast instead of hotel like previous years. I have to say that the house is wonderful – I liked the statues a lot, rooms are spacious and comfortable, breakfast was magnificent (specially the fruit salad and fresh baked bread), garden is absolutely magical but most off all it's the attitude.
from theinternet site; villaverde offers a unique blend of the relaxed, familiar atmosphere of a private house, and the high standards of a small hotel, thereby making it ideal for business travellers and tourists alike.Villaverde as the ideal starting point for all activities. In all of villaverde’s rooms you will find the following:
Bathroom with shower and toilet
Large Flatscreen TV
A lift is also available for the guests

what hotels to recommend ?: Difficult choice !
To me the best hotels in Salzburg are Sacher, Goldener Hirsch and Bristol. My other hotel-favorites are to be seen at my Salzburg-tips on VT!
As to your teenagers: it might be nice, to take them to Hellbrunn-castle, where some surprises regarding hidden fountains etc are to be found. A walk up to Salzburg castle is also worthwile. Regarding evening programs the youngsters are certainly more up to date than the two of us, there are some very nice dicotheques in the city!

Pension Garni: Pension run by nuns
We stayed at this lovely 20-rooms pension in mid October 2007. There were only 3 guests there at that time.
It was quiet, located off the main streets, but close to the city center.
Super clean. They make your beds every day, clean rubbish and bring fresh towels. Just like a hotel would.
PRICE: Payed 80 euro for a twin room for both of us.
Run by nuns. :)
FREE tasty breakfast (ham, butter, am, cheese, coffee, tea, milk, juice, cereal) from 7.30am to 9am.
There is an old cemetery nearby. We went there early in the morning, it was peaceful and interesting.

Hotel Itzlinger Hof: Quite Hotel / Restaurant
Because there was a big bike race that weekend, we had a hard time finding a place to stay. We ended up at the Hotel Itzlinger Hof, which turned out to be a nice place, even if it was a bit more expensive (probably due to the bike race), and not close to the center of town.
We had a quad room which was 1 double bed and 1 pull-out couch, which was actually more comfortable that it sounds. I don't know if this is true of all the rooms, but the bathroom was a bit odd. There was a window with a shade between the main room and the bathroom, so if you were in the bathroom with the light on and it was dark in the main room, your silouette was visible.
The linens were nice, although again we had the down comforter as the only blanket, which was way too much for 70+ degrees Farehneit.
However, the service was good, and the dinner we had in the restaurant was wonderful! The restaurant was not crowded at all (when we first sat down only 2 other tables were occupied), and the waiter (same person who seemed to run everything else in the hotel) made some suggestions and had the kitchen make us a traditional desert that I don't think was on the menu.
Breakfast was included, and the same man was working the breakfast area the next day. He must be a hard worker!

Pension Hutter: a 3star pension next to the airport
Pension Hutter is the cheapest possibility to sleep directely close to the airport, it is the next building to the - much more expensive - Airporthotel and also there you will not hear any noises of the airplanes landing or departing..
I was standing in front of these hotels and could not hear any noises, it is even a lot more quiet than in most places in the centre of Salzburg.
The Prices in Pension Hutter are moderate :
single-room : 40 - 49 euros
double-rooms : 62 - 76 euros
Triple-rooms : 84 - 99 euros
these prices are per room, per night
There are enough parking-spaces in front of the Pension Hutter. To Hangar 7 it is a walking-time of about 20 minutes, or maybe they have a better access to the other side of the airfield that I did not find !

Airporthotel Salzburg: next to the airport & close to Hangar 7
Airporthotel Salzburg has a really excellent place close to the airport of Salzburg, about 200 meters from the main entrance and roll-fields, BUT still you will almost NOT hear any noises of starting or landing airplanes.
They have their own garage, but also the public parking of the airport is just about 50 meters from the hotel.
The Airporthotel is not really a cheap place :
Singlerooms are 95,- to 125 euros
double rooms are 135,- to 175 euros
all prices include breakfast-buffet
You may get easily to this hotel , when you arrive at the highway A1 or when you take the bus from the city-centre of Salzburg to Salzburg - Flughfafen.
When reserving a room in this hotel, please considder,
that cancellations are free of charge
only untill 7 days before arrival
untill 04.00p.m. !!

Haus Gertrud: Renting a Holiday Flat
We had rented an apartment in Bayrisch Gmain, just across the border in Germany. We needed about 30 minutes to get to the parking garage in Salzburg's centre, not bad at all.The aprtment had two bedrooms,a nice living-room, kitchen, toilet, bathroom. A coin operated washing machine and dryer were in the cellar, bikes could be used without any extra charge.
True, when renting an aprtment there is no maid service and you have to make your own bed, but I think the extra space is well worth it.
It was the second time we had stayed there and it won't be the last.
There is a bus service into the centre of Salzburg, also to the airport.

Camping Kasern: Camping Kasern
This was the closer campsite to Salzburg still open in October so we decided to try it. We were not disappointed, specially with the showers - superb! Best shower I ever had in a campsite :)
There is a kitchen you can use and also a bar selling drinks and hot food but we didn't try it, we went to Salzburg for food.
In October 05 we paid 13 euros for 2 people and a small tent.
Camping Kasern has a website with prices and information how to get to the camping (see below). But please note the bus number has changed from number 15 to number 21. Just follow the website instructions with this change in mind and you'll be fine.
From Salzburg Airport to the Camping, by bus:
Outside the terminal, get bus number 2. Most people will get off at the main station (Hauptbanhof), you can carry on inside the bus and get off at "Mirabellplatz" (third stop after the station). Cross the road and them take bus number 21. Get off at bus stop "Jagewirt" which is right in front of the Camping Kasern.
The bus system in Sazlburg is excellent, the buses indicate how the next stop is called and all bus stops have timetables, it's very easy to use. You can buy the ticket from machines or from the driver.

Friends in Salzburg: There is no place like home
One of the great things about traveling to a place where you know people is that they can host you while on vacation. As luck would have it, we had friends (Tommy & Greti) who lived in Salzburg and ended up staying with them during our time in the city.
Set in a residential area near the river, we had our own room, cable tv, a huge yard, ample food, coffee, beer, wine but most importantly, we had the opportunity to relax and kick back with our friends
