We stayed in a campground not far from the city. Easy walking distance, 1-2km for us backpackers. Friendly staff, nice elderly couple owns the place. Washrooms are clean, grounds are clean.
It has been awhile since I was there, but it was only a couple dollars more to rent a tent that was already set up and was the size to sleep 5 people with cots and all!

This view opened to us from the window of our room in the Zimmer (guest-house)on Mondsee sea about 15 km from Salzburg. This room had a big double bed, TV, closet and nice shower. At the morning we got breakfast on a ground floor of Zimmer. It was a beautiful night in a beautiful place.
The price for night in this place was about 30 US $.

We stayed at the Hotel Amadeus...
We stayed at the Hotel Amadeus (hey, imagine that) and it was very nice. The price was reasonable, and we got a huge room, with TV,private bathroom and breakfast included. It is Aldstadt, and located beside a church called St. Sebastian who's bell chimed non-stop (i like that). The building itself is from the 15th century, and is clean and well kempt.
Old 15th century building located beside St. Sebastian Kirsche, in the old city centre of Salzburg in the pedestrian zone. A few minutes walk from all the beautiful sights! I'll get the price in a few days (I've left my travel diary at someone's house)

As I was waiting for an early...
As I was waiting for an early plane to London, I wanted to stay near the airport. The airport hotel was 'zu teuer' so I found that Etap hotel. It's a chain of Etap hotels all over Europe.
I payed there 35 EUR for room without breakfast, showers and SAT TV included. howewer it would be much cheaper if you travel in pair, just +6 EUR for 2nd person.
P.S. There are three beds in the room, as nobody can see you (entrance is completley separated from the check-in desk) you can easily bring another person (or 25 of them if they want to sleep on the floor).
I noticed a good invention in that hotel. If you are in Salzburg late you can just get the room with a credit card placed in self-service automat. You will recive a code which opens your door and you can oversleep there without any help of clerc. Convenient.

great rooms in small country inns
Watch out for the many great country inns, offering hotel-rooms
I prefer that kind of lodging to a room of a hotel-chain...
But mostly I take my motorhome anyway - and parking it is easy at most of the places in Salzburg and stay there at night, as long as you obey all signs...

There are plenty of 3 star & 4 star hotels in and around Salzburg, also a few five star ones. We stayed in a 4 star hotel which was pretty comfortable with all facilities, although a little away from the city centre.

The place Heidi and I stayed...
The place Heidi and I stayed is about 4 minutes above Salzburg, by train. A Eurail pass will work on this train, so it doesn't cost anything. It was actually a pension, a home owned by a woman named Rosemarie. There were huge, fluffy, yellow comforters on the beds, and each morning Rosemarie would give us breakfast, and then also let us take enough food for lunch that day! It only cost about US $15 (which is pretty good for all that). We loved it so much here we stayed an extra few nights!
I have also heard of a fun hostel right in Salzburg. Apparently they have nightly showings of 'The Sound of Music' and it is a fun, party atmosphere. We needed to relax, but it would have been a great place to meet other people.
This picture is the view we had from our rooms. We could see the valley and rolling hills, as well as the mountains. It was great!

We got the family room (sleeps 4) for around $100 USD.
Breakfast is included and we had a private bath in our room.

The Landaus Appesbach is the only place to stay. The Duke of Windsor stayed here in 1937. If you want more information on this hotel, go to the 'I Suggest' area of my web site www.europewithasmile.com and choose Austria. This place is killer!

Old Cliffie has never stayed at the same place twice on his visits to Salzburg. Or is it because no respectable establishment would accommodate old Cliffie twice? Anyway, on a recent visit he chose the Hotel Amadeus (yeah, it's that guy again), a smallish hotel on the Linzergasse, just five minutes from the main part of town across the river, but a good half-hour hike from the railway station or the Augustinerbräu beerhall. Rooms are clean and adequate and reasonably-priced. The breakfast buffet allows you to save your lunch money for beer.

Absolutely one of the top two accomodations I enjoyed in Europe (the other being the beach in Sugia, Crete!) It was a hostel, I don't recall the name, but it was the only one perched up over the Altstadt in what I imagine was a guardhouse for the Festung complex [on the Monchsberg (sp?)]. Very inexpensive, but also in high demand. Clean, if shared rooms, very comfrotable. Great terrace and cafe and the view, the sounds were all just magical. What more could an American possibly hope to experience of the 'Old Country'?!

I arrived at six p.m. on a Saturday without a place for the night! As a result, I can safely say that it is worth it to plan your accommodation well in advance if you want to be centrally located. I was very fortunate to find the lovely Pension Mayburgerkai and please see the picture for the view from my clean, well-appointed, nicely decorated room.
I looked out over the River Isar, the river that runs through Salzburg.
Inexpensive, well-located, considerate hosts, and a fine, filling breakfast in the morning.

(Gasthof - Hotel, Familie Eisl)
We were directed to this hotel by the Tourist Office just outside of Salzburg. The rooms are fairly large and very clean and comfortable with a nice desk and small refrigerator. The restaurant provided good meals and it has a very nice bar area. The service was good and everyone on the staff went above and beyond the call of duty to assist us. Although it is not that close to downtown Salzburg the trip is easy enough to make and the price reasonable enough to stay. Do watch out for where they place you....stay to the front of the hotel if possible. It backs up to a small river and some interesting smells came up on occasion.
