Great hotel near train station

We arrived to Salzburg by train and needed a relatively cheap accommodation. I found Mercure Salzburg City using Venere.com and got a great rate. We walked with our backpacks for about 5-10 minutes and arrived at the hotel. We got in really early and they were nice enough to hold our bags until they had an open room for us to check in to (they did this after we checked out as well). The hotel was very American, like a Holiday Inn. We had a big room and bathroom that was very clean. The staff all spoke English which made our check-in, check-out process super east. If we find ourselves back in Salzburg in the future we will definitely stay at the same hotel, no question.

A lovely hotel

We stayed here as part of some birthday celebrations (john's parents joined us after we bought tickets for everyone cheaply on the internet). It was a thoroughly worthwhile experience. The hotel is well located, about 15 minutes from the train station by foot and about the same distance on foot to the Aldstadt. The hotel is bright and warm and clean and the staff are friendly. The hotel rooms are lovely, nice and spacious with a lovely view of the Alps. There were lots of little extras in the room too; the type you would expect from a 4-star hotel.

The restaurant area is very large (and includes a small bar). The breakfast is simply amazing: honestly, we think this is the best hotel breakfast we've had anywhere in the world!

A few quibbles:

The hotel lacks a proper big foyer/bar in which to relax. The foyer of the hotel does have a few chairs but they are not very inviting for spending large amounts of time. The bar is a small bar adjoined to the restaurant, but again it lacks a certain feeling of invitation.

However, these are relatively minor quibbles and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

A: "Couldn't say which is more "polite", but I'd say "grüss Gott" is more common."
