Trips to Hallstatt, St Wolfgang, St Gilgen

by axsal

I'm heading to Austria next week and I will have 3.5 days in Salzburg. I will not have a car. I want to have enough time to explore the city itself, but would also like to get out to the beautiful Salzkammergut region.

Would spending one day in Hallstatt and one day in St Gilgen and St Wolfgang be a good idea, or would that leave me with too little time in Salzburg? Is one day enough in the Salzkammergut region?

Would you recommend doing this tour, which hits all three locations in one day http://www.sallerhof.com/en-attraction-hallstatt.htm#41 ?

Thank you for any input you can give me - I wish I had more time in the area! :-(

Is doing St Gilgen by boat to St Wolfgang, a trip up Schafberg, train over to Hallstatt a realistic day trip idea?

I think that it is doable though not ideal. But since this area is more about scenic beauty than art galleries, churches or museums, you should be able to enjoy it immensely from the train and boat. Maybe you will have time for a stroll around each place,I'm not really sure as I have only been to Hallstatt from Salzburg and I did stay overnight there. My advice is to go anyway. You will never have all the time you need to see every place you want to see no one ever does no matter what part of the world they are visiting, so I believe that seeing whatever you can is better than nothing at all. Enjoy this fabulous part of the world.

I did a tour with exactly the same itinerary and I really liked it. Of course it was a little rushed, but still I could very much enjoy the places and the boat trip was awesome, the scenery was amazing. Of course you can't see everything in the three places, but still, on our tour we had enough time to explore the main sights and stroll around. So I'd definately recommend it especially if you do not have a car.

Travel Tips for Salzburg

salzburg card

by denise16

No matter how long or short your visit I would recommend buying a salzburg card. The tourist office sells them and so do many hotels.
The card will get you into many attractions within the city for free, the public transport will be free within the city boundaries and just outside the city the card can be used on the Untseburg Cable car (and te bus to the cable-car).
the card will always get reduced rates into many attractions. You will soon get you monies worth. visit the website for more details and up to date prices.

You must visit the cathedrals,...

by shdw100

You must visit the cathedrals, they are absolutely some of the best that I have ever seen in Europe, not too ornate, but wonderfully pristine! We saw some Peruvians playing traditional music in the town center of Salzburg. It really made me homesick for Peru where I lived for awhile. Even though they were traveling around Europe as well, they are a fond memory while visiting.

Hohensalzburg Fortress...

by CandS

Check out Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Entry was AS35.

It's really nice up there and you can get a great view of the city. From the top of the fortress there is a fantastic view of the beautiful aqua clear river too. We had an audio guide each for the castle and it gave us a great tour!

We took the funicular (about AS24) up to the fortress and walked back down...I think it was a good idea because the people who had walked up looked very tired. ;)

Guided Salzburg

by WrigleyTodd

If you can find a private guide or go through a knowledgeable tour operator, you may have a much different experience in Salzburg then just walking the street by yourself. Salzburg is a city of great history, stories and tales. You may benefit from taking tours (not the sound of music one!) like the audio tour at the fortress and a private walking tour. The other option is to read up on the city before you visit. Most stories and histories of Salzburg are found in big books on Austria. There aren't that many Salzburg only tourist books and the ones I found aren't that detailed.

Cafes

by acemj

The Sacher, the Glockenspiel and the Tomaselli are some of the more famous cafes of Salzburg. Vienna isn't the only Austrian city known for elegant cafes, rich coffee and sinful desserts. Be sure to spend at least a few relaxing moments in one of these spots while you're in Salzburg.
