Standard Hostel
This is a pretty standard hostel although they tend to charge you for everything. It is within walking distance of the old town and train station, has a reasonably priced bar with cable TV and was very social and you get a free large locker in the room.
I have a few problems with the place, namely the internet access is really expensive (go to the Internet cafe around the corner for half the cost), the staff were very unhelpful and on occasions rude and there was no kitchen. For such a large hostel you would have thought that they could have a guest kitchen. What makes this worse is the price of the food served at the hostel. The food is not expensive but it is only slightly cheaper than eating out. So as well as the room price you were kind of forced to eat your breakfast and dinner there and along with the internet there are a few 'hidden costs'.

A nice place to stay
Plus: Nice folks (Didnt meet anyone rude in Austria :) ), clean hostel.
Minus: No guest kitchen. They have dinner too, I didnt hear good opinion about that from the people who I was eating with. Well, I had pasta, and how can anyone screw up pasta anyway.
Will stay there again (unless I find so much free time to research on another hostel)

An ok place to stay
The Yoho Hostel is an ok place to stay. The staff is friendly, and the rooms are ok. The bathrooms are clean, and there's also a little restaurant and bar.
We found some of the rules of the hostel a bit too strict, like "no food in the rooms", and some of the posters were not to friendly. The Yoho staff were very helpful answering all sorts of questions. They can get you in touch with local companies offering different activities, and also other hostels in the International Youth Hostel chain.
Their slogan is "Easy to find, hard to leave!". I agree with the first part, but I had no trouble leave the hostel. I was sorry to leave Slazburg tough!

Great Youth hostel
The hostel was located within a 10-15 mintue walk from both Mozarts square and the Salzburg Castle. The staff was very helpful and were willing to help you out by making calls to organize tours for you or getting you a taxi. The rooms were extrodinarily clean and the price included an all you can eat breakfast every morning.

Hope you like the Sound of Music...
5 minute walk from the train station. The Yoho has a friendly bar and clean rooms. one thing that distiguishes from most accomodations in Europe is that it provides an American breakfast. After several months of bread and butter for breakfast-eggs and bacon made me feel like royalty!!
Unique Quality: They play "The Sound of Music" on a continuous loop in a TV room.

a shower a day
i stayed in salzburg for 2 days 1 night, and it's the hostel i spent the night in. the hostel facilities are pretty good, and new. the price is reasonable if you compared with the hostels in western europe. but i don't quite like the shower system, it costs 50cents to take a shower although one shower is included in the price. but 1 shower 1 day is reasonable, would be better if it's not limited. my roommates were pretty friendly. and the view from the room was ok. and would be better if the washroom is larger

Best hostel
The best place to stay in Salzburg is YoHo. It is reasonably cheap compared to the rest of the city and has a bar to start your evening off. People residing here are usually up for a good night out and the staff are very helpful. It is located in the new town, not far from the main railway station.
Unique Quality: Nice, clean dorms, a bar downstairs, clothes washing facilities, decent food, friendly staff, 24 hour entry.
