Travel Tips for Sankt Gilgen

Taking the Wolfgangsee Ferry

by yooperprof

The Wolfgangsee is much loved and much used by visitors to St. Gilgen. You should plan on taking a ferry ride across the deep yet narrow lake, either partially across to St. Wolfgang, or all the way across to Stroibl, some 8 miles distance on the other side. The ferry leaves from a quay in the center of St. Gilgen, and is often a hub of bustling activity. Buy your ticket from the booth, and relax with a soothing beverage at one of the lakeside bars.

Boating

by acemj

The Wolfgansee is a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains and is a perfect setting to rent a boat or other type of watercraft. You can head down to the waterfront and rent a boat, but be sure to ask about proper licensing and other legal issues.

Surfing in Sankt Gilgen

by globetrott

Surfing is also quite popular in Sankt Gilgen, and the Gold Medal for surfing in the Olympics was won by Christoph Sieber from Sankt Gilgen. Nothing special, BUT be prepared :
Winds are always rather strong in the area !

Sankt Gilgen (St. Gilgen)

"Day Trip from Salzburg"

Nancy and I seldom take tours, but chose to go on a very small group tour from Salzburg in order to see some of the lake country and small towns in the vicinity. The first stop on that tour was Sankt Gilgen, one of three resort towns on the shore of the Wolfgangsee (Lake Wolfgang). This quaint little village was filled with tourists, mostly German-speaking, but enjoyable in spite of the crowds. It's a relaxing type of place where we would enjoy spending more time.

W.A. Mozart's mother was born in the village, and there is considerable "mozartiana" in evidence in shops.

I took no still photos of St. Gilgen, but have compiled a brief video which you may view.

a great place for a vacation & buy a Lederhosen !

by globetrott

Sankt Gilgen is a small town opposite of St.Wolfgang in Salzkammergut and the famous Schafberg !

It might be a nice place to buy a Lederhosen...

On my pic : Mark (VT-member acemj) posing for my Lederhosen-picture

And he DID NOT buy it !!!!!
