Near the summit of the Grossglockner pass.

I suppose when one is in Zell am See it is a ciustom to visit the pass and to say to all the world that I was there.

My onward journey was to be by train which climbs up by Bad Gastein and then tunnels its way thorugh to the south to Villach.

The Schmittenhöhe is Zell am See's so called Home Mountain. There is a funicular going up to a wonderful hiking area. One of them is the famous Pinzgau Hike. A hike of a few days in the area of Hohe Tauern National Park. Great views etc.

The hike seems to be not difficult but only long. Before you do this one you need to prepair yourself.

An easier walk is the one called: Höhenpromenade adventure trail

This walk brings you down to the Valley Station from the Schmittenhöhebahn.

Kaprun is an interesting village closeby Zell am See and you will find there some great houses built in the typical style of the area, an old castle and a car-museum, I made an extra tip about this museum in my Off-the-beaten path-tips ! In Kaprun you will also find the highest waterdam in Austria and the Hochgebirgsstauseen Kaprun. There will be guided tours there mainly in the mid of summer :
From June 3rd till October 10th, 2010
daily from 08.10am till 04.45 pm

Zell am See, Austria Wedding

by Jannacle

"Wedding at the Castle Rosenberg"

Well, in my limited travels this was so far the most beautiful and amazing place I have been. We came to Zell am See for the wedding of a friend who had moved to England and become engaged there. The Wedding was held at the 16th century Castle Rosenberg which is the most beautiful piece of architecture in the town in my opinion.
The skiing here is great as one would expect and most of the folks head into town to the pubs as eveing hits. If you like to drink you will find that that is a huge past time here. The locals are very friendly and the pubs get more so as the night goes on.
This definately a place to come to enjoy Austrian culture and a bit of snow.
