Visit the Kaprun glacier
Alight at the second last Postbus # 660 stop (Kaprun Kitzsteinhorn - Glacierjet). We took this trip on our return from Kesselfall, however, note that the snow play area at the summit (which is great fun for kids) closes around 15:30 and during bad weather.
Ask for the tickets right to the top which involves three different cable car trips - need to change twice. Once you reach the summit, you take the funicular down to the snow plateau which has abundant snow and lots of opportunity for the kids and adults alike, to play in the snow.
This high alpine road leads to some of the world's most fantastic unspoilt scener in "the Hohe Tauern" National Park. You can see all the climatic and vegetation zones from Austria through the Arctic - meadows, forests, alpine pastures, rocks and ice. At your destination you face the highest mountain in Austria- the "Grossglockner" (3,798m) and you are high above the "Pasterzengletscher", a glacier described as a unique natural wonder.
That's what the brochure says and I couldn't say it better. I've been here several times now maybe 6 or 7 times and everytime I get here I still discover new things to see and enjoy.
If you're here it is a must see! Only problem is you need a day with nice weather to really enjoy the views etc.
More on Grossglockner to come!
Zell am See -all green and blue
Normally I don't use postcard images on my pages, but none of my photos do enough justice to the beauty of this town.
Zell am See is a small town on the shores of Lake Zell with a car-free center, and a wide range of shops, restaurants and off-slope activity options. It offers you year round skiing thanks to its' bus link to the glacier of neighboring Kaprun. In the summer it's possible to make that rare combo of skiing in the morning then hitting a beach party in the afternoon for a swim by the lake.
I'm not any keen on skiing or other winter sports myself but fancy the Alps as a beauttiful scenery with blue lakes and green mountains rising up towards the sky instead. Therefore we went to Zell am See in summer, and weren't even the only tourists there ;) We had a hotel in Zell am See for a week and rented a car for a few days to be able to visit sights as Krimml waterfalls, Hohenwerfen castle or Liechtensteinklamm gorge, and cities like Salzburg and Innsbruck as one day trips.
