Travel Tips for Zell am See

Great service from the Post bus and it's driver.

by dabidc

The bus and it's driver gets you to the top and since this is on the south side of the mountains it is sheltered from all the snow.

In fact it feels much warmer.

There is plenty of time to eat, go onto the Glacier and walk around.

Schmittenhöhe is the 2000meter mountain with cable transport access from Zell am See and Schuttdorf.

From Schuttdorf you take the gondola - Areitbahn 1, which takes a stop at Areitalm (but don't get off there if you want to go up - the same gondola goes further up) - Areitbahn 2 then you reach again an intermediate stop then take Areitbahn 3 for the top (2000m).

Going up from Schuttdorf is the best way because you have gondolas and you are warm.

From Zell am See you take the gondola City Xpress then the 4 persons chairlift Kirschkogel then you intersect the Areitbahn and take the Areitbahn 3 to the top.

Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse

by globetrott

Grossglockner is the highest mountain in Austria with a hight of 3.798 m above the Sea-level. In the year 1800 the first successful expedition reached its peak and still today you can get there only when you are an experienced climber.
Grossglockner-Hochalpenstrasse passes by this mountain in a distance of several km, you will have a great view to Grossglockner and its surrounding alpine peaks from many places, but the ordinary tourists will never get really close to it.
Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Hoehe is maybe the closest place you may get to by car, then you may walk a bit closer on Gamsgruberweg, but after some hundred meters the path gets dangerous, and you need a good climbing equipment to continue.

Camping in Zell Am See, Austria

by ezjeeper

"July 4, 2003 Camping"

July 4th weekend, 4 days after Kit and Nikki land in Germany and we are off to Austria for camping with friends. Campground is in Zell am See, near the location for Sound of Music. Had a good time despite the rain. Visit Eisriesenwelft Werfen - the world's largest ice caves. Awesome! We eat dinner one night in Berchtesgaden, which is where Hitler's Eagles' Nest is located. Didn't make it to the Eagles' Nest, but we'll be back.
