Wales will play soccer against Trinidad & Tobago in Graz? How come? Is that some sort of tournament?

Hi Neil !

Don't worry ! Once, you are there, you will be faszinated because the old part of the city is gorgeous, realy ! The zone round the "Hauptpaltz" (Mainplace) is incredible... May be you would like to have a view over the city ? Try climbing up the "Schloßberg" (It's the hill with the castle on the top).

Nightlife ? Hart to say... There is no "nightlife" at all... but when you are at the "Hauptplatz", then take the "Hofgasse" and after 50 meters the next small street on the right side. It will lead you to an outher place (I forgot the name), where a lot of pubs have taken place...

Have a nice trip !

I wrote a mistake: "Hauptplatz" is correct, not "Hauptpaltz" ;0)

In the early 1990s I had to work several months/year in Graz. From my (10 years old) experience the terms "Graz" and "nightlife" rule out each other. It became absolutely boring after 9pm, so I can only hope that the situation has changed since.

Travel Tips for Graz

My eye is such that it stops...

by oja

My eye is such that it stops on details rather than the full picture. Maybe it's because I'm short...;) Anyway, if you like the same, the area around the Main Square is where you'll surely spend some quality time. You can't miss it: cross the river Mur (after stepping off the train or parking your car) and head for the church you see in the intro. There! I was pleasantly surprised to have found Graz alive and breathing on a Saturday afternoon. It's a good indicator of its spirit. Ljubljana is unfortunately always so empty... :(

Mehlplatz

by croisbeauty

Mehlplatz, situated right next to the Glochenspieleplatz, is another little gem of the city. This square is very colourful, closed with fine buildings on each of its side. Great number of restaurants, breweries and cafe-bars are located on the square, making it just an perfect nightlife spot especially in the summer time. Besides, the prices for food and drink are not expensive.

Franz Josef

by croisbeauty

The emperor Franz Josef was the greatest ever emperors of the Hapsburg family. He succseded in making so called K und K monarchy one of the most powerfull states in Europe and the rest of the world. K und K monarchy ruled over the whole of the Central European territory.
Most of the Austrians admire this emperor even today being very pround on his great both political and cultural achivements.

The Great Well

by aramat

This beautiful well stands on the top of the Schlossberg, among the ruins of the fortress. The cistern was built in the 16th century, the well canopy was added at the end of the 19th. It has a capacity of 900,000 litres (one of the largest construction of its kind). Today it serves as a reservoir for firefighters.

Kanonenbastei & Garnisonsmuseum

by globetrott

The Kanonenbastei / Cannon-hut on Schlossberg dates back to the year 1544 and it was built according to plans made by Domenico Dell' Allio. Today you may visit a small museum inside this part of Schloßberg and these cannons have first served its purpose here on this very spot in oder to fight against enemies... later they were used also in order to warn the population of Graz of approaching enemies and of fire. Some of the cannons may be seen from outside of the museum, I also made my picture from the terrace in front of the Garnisonsmuseum.
The Garnisons-museum is open
tuesday-sunday 10.00a.m. - 05.00p.m.
