From Graz to Munich

by HSS211

I will be visiting Graz this month. I want to meet a friend in Munich at the end of my trip or perhaps in the middle. I'm not sure which is the best option, but in trying to figure these things I out I wanted to ask. My question is should I take a train from Graz to Munich and fly back to the US from Munich? And how long will the train ride be?

Re: From Graz to Munich

Usual time for a train ride is about 6 hours. The best thing to do is to buy tickets online and in advance (http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?ld=212.8&seqnr=4&ident=0j.0157348.1226358079&rt=1&rememberSortType=minDeparture&REQ0HafasScrollDir=1)
In this case you can get discounted "Europa-Spezial Österreich" tickets for as low as 29 euro

Thank you for the quick response and the link.

Much appreciated!

in order to get such a 29 euro ticket IN ADVANCE your ticket will be sent by mail to an adress only, and if you dont have an adress, you have to buy the ticket directely at the counter as soon as you arrive.
such tickets are rare, so you better try early or be prepared to pay the full amount.

Even if you would not be able to get "rare" 29 euro ticket or less rare 39 euro tickets, I would never recommend to buy full price ticket (more than 70 euro), simply because there are always ways to save - for instance - combination of Einfach-Raus-Ticket (for OEBB part) and Bavaria lander ticket (for DB) makes the sum 28+19=47euro (it extends travel time slightly, but saves you almost 30 euro) etc.

Travel Tips for Graz

What to see in 2-3 hours in Graz ??

by globetrott

Graz is quite a small city and most of the attractions for tourists are in the very centre of town.
From the train-station " Graz Hauptbahnhof" you may take the trams #1, 3, 6, or 7 and will be at the Hauptplatz within 7-10 minutes.
There you may first take a look at the townhall, the Landhaus and Landeszeughaus.
Take the small street opposite of Landhaus and you will get to Glockenspielplatz with the chimes & plenty of restaurants in the so-called "Bermuda-triangle"
You may continue walking through Färbergasse to Sporgasse, turn to the right and get to Hofgasse , see the Hofbäckerei and walk to Burg, Dom and Mausoleum
Walk back to Sporgasse and walk down to Hauptplatz again...
Such a walk could be done easily during a short stop-over of 2 hours ! Another possibility to explore Graz from Hauptplatz is to walk Sackstrasse and go to the Lift im Berg - go up Schlossberg and see the Uhrturm.
Also the Murinsel is just about 400 meters from the Hauptplatz.

On my picture : Schloss Eggenberg - it is into the other direction from the train-station, but you certainly need about 2 hours to get there, as the park is quite large and in a big distance to the trams.

Youthful feel

by Imbi

Still, Graz always managed to maintain a youthful feel - not that you would expect anything else in a city where nearly one person in five is a student. The oldest university dates back to 1585 and, when surrounded by its red-tiled roofs, you could be forgiven for thinking for a moment that you'd stumbled across a tiny Toulouse. If they didn't all speak German and such very good English, of course.

Be polite

by Boniek

Austrians are like the Irish - very polite. When you're in a bar/shop/brothel the common courtesy is to say "Gruce Got" (not correct spelling). It's all you have to say to someone and they'll appreciate it. It's like saying "Hi, how are ya?".

Open-air swimming

by orlikins

Open Air swimming pool in Andritz, a northern suburb of Graz. Also you can go to St Margarethenbad, in the town, you can get Student discount (40ATS for as long as you like at the time), but it's got damn cold water!! Swimming togs

K&K Hofbäckerei Edegger Tax

by globetrott

K&K Hofbäckerei Edegger Tax is a traditional bakery and confectionary in Graz / Hofgasse with a long tradition :
Don't miss this great traditional bakery - HOFbäckerei is a title that only those backeries were allowed to use, that were delivering their goods to the royal court, and of course the taste of the emperor was a certain guarantee for perfect goods and service !
Specialities like "Sissi-Busserl" and "Kaiser-Zwieback" may be tasted there still today !
Hofbäckerei Edegger Tax with the golden royal eagle on top of their entrance-gate - that is certainly the most beautiful of all shop-facades in Graz. When you enlarge my picture, you may see some of the fine wooden decorations and inlaids, the whole facade was recently restored.
Be prepared that this bakery is a bit more expensive than others in that area !
Click on the link below and take a look at their interesting web-page !!
The adress is : Hofbäckerei Edegger A 8010 Graz Hofgasse 6
