Good weekend trips from Graz....
by ivarnam09
I will be in Graz for three weeks in August working as an au pair while the family is on vacation. I am 21, not a really big party animal. Not really looking for clubs or bars. Just wanted to know the must-sees in Graz. Also, I have the weekends off, so thought about traveling to Salzburg or Slovenia. Any suggestions for a good SAFE weekend trip. Don't speak much German either. Somewhere with reasonable accomodations, like hostels, and with lots to see. Would welcome any help. I love architecture, geology and like to learn about history. Quick trips in Graz for the afternoons would be good suggestions too...

Travel Tips for Graz
very austrian
by fabrice
if you arrive from italy, where everyone speaks loudly, suddenly at the border everyone is quiet;it is very austrian...
In the train from bruck/mur to graz,I was in front of a very very very pretty girl, who was reading a funny magazine.
She started to laugh, and pffff she looked around to see if she had disturbed someone...
Therefore the great nightlife...

When you walk through the streets of Graz, you'll notice that there are a lot of young people. I haven't actually been out [like clubbing] there, but it's something I should definitely try - to check out the club scene... ;)
Hundebar

This bowl of water for dogs was offered on Sporgasse (I'm sorry I don't remember the name of the bar, they would deserve to be mentioned) and I love the idea very much: it's so simple, but shows care and I'm sure it's welcome by pet owners.
Turkish Man
by Peterodl
Above the streets of Graz there is a reason that you occasionally see people walking with their heads raised up. They're trying to find the Turkish Man that sticks out the window of one of the buildings.
It's a fun thing to try to find, just watch out where you're walking.
St. Nicholas
by aramat
This statue of St. Nicholas stands on Nikolaiplatz, a few steps from the Hotel Weitzer (Grieskai), along the river Mur. There are many legends related to his life, particularly about his generousity which led to the creation of today's Santa Claus. St. Nicholas is the patron of children, of those who are in need, and the sailors and the travellers, among others.
6 December is St. Nicholas's day and it is celebrated in many European countries by gift giving and various activities. In Hungary, the Mikulas usually brings chocolate, oranges and smaller toys, and leaves them in the shoes and boots left out on the windowsill. It's fun to get and give gifts a few weeks before Christmas and it definitely puts everyone in the holiday mood.
Below is the URL of a great site about St. Nicholas.
