Brrrr ...
by phil_uk_net
Mariazell is cold. The first morning I was there it was -15 degrees and had probably been down to -20 overnight. The temperature can dip to -30. What made things worse was that less than a week before arriving I had been in Bangkok where the temperature was 35!
The picture, believe it or not, is of a lake. It is completely frozen over and covered with snow.
Mariazell is a great place if you like lots of snow and lots of nothing.
Hauptplatz
by phil_uk_net
While sitting in Der Goldener Löwe one day enjoying a cake and coffee I noticed a picture frame full of old postcards on the wall next to my table. It was then that I realised Hauptplatz had been renamed - I guess around 1945.
One of the postcards showed the square and its former name - Adolf Hitler Platz! I was quite amused but then again I do have a perverse sense of humour.
Mariazeller Advent
by Fam.Rauca
Mariazell is a centre of Central European spiritual lives.
Approximately one million pilgrims from whole world come annually to Mariazell.
They come here to pray and to admire the lovely landscape.
Many of these believers like to come, specifically on the four weekends before Christmas, to the Mariazeller Advent.
The town is in this time, a real winter miracle world.
You have the possibility here to experience the Advent very intensively.
The Basilica stands in centre of the Mariazell Advent festivities.
Morning Roraten and Advent fairs, big concerts, and small prayers take place here.
On the 21st December is the foundation day of the town.
The tasteful Advent market stretches to feet of the basilica over the main place.
There are to buy real and authentic products.
You find here, sundries gifts, Christmas decorations, special scents and seasonings, woodcuttings and glistening Christian tree balls.
The Mariazell Advent market is extending this year.
A whole street appears as Advent market area.
The smell of orange punch and cinnamon stars, gingerbreads and vanilla cookie bewitches the whole market.
In the middle of the market, exactly opposite from basilica, is placed the "Mariazeller Adventkranz" (Advent wreath) with 24 candles.
That is the world-wide biggest hanging wreath.
The biggest suspended Christmas wreath
by Fam.Rauca
In Mariazell, opposite the baroque basilica, is placed, every year, during the Advent time, the biggest hanging wreath of the world.
It has 12 meters of diameter and weighs six tons.
A candle, from the 24 candles on the wreath, is ignited daily.
The daily ignition of a candle, is the symbol of illuminating of dark winter evenings until the light-whole Christmas celebration.
It is played Christian music and the people sing Christmas songs.
It is a tradition where memories of the childhood become awake and one enjoys the collared miracle earth.
Lebzelterei Mariazell
by Fam.Rauca
The gingerbreads of Mariazell are fame and a history.
Here is a special exhibition, from gingerbreads, mead, and wax.
There, you can see a copy of the Mariazeller town kernel
from gingerbreads and marzipan.
That is: Minimundus Mariazell.
You learn worth knowing about the Lebzeltertradition.
It is an experience for all visitors.
