Hotel Schlosslhof: RCI Resort in Austria or apartments

Near the famous alpine region of Axamer-Lizum and a short walk into Axams, a really cute Tyrolean village. There is also a ski slope out the back of the hotel. This was used as a hotel for the 1964 and 1976 Olympics. However, it has since been developed into 35 apartments that are let on a timeshare basis. They keep a few apartments for general rental so it's worth asking, especially if it is not in ski season.

We spent a wonderful week there and visited Innsbruck twice, Salzburg, Plansee, Mittenwald and Garmisch in Bavaria and Axams itself where we had a wonderful experience taking part in a local religious procession.

If you come in as a timeshare, you pay your maintenance fee and that's about it. Otherwise, check the web site for prices.

Unique Quality: You are on the edge of town so it really feels like country even though it's a five minute walk into the village. You look out on fields and the Alps in the front and a ski slope in the back. The roads are excellent in the area and the views stunning.

We only ate at the hotel restaurant once and it was not memorable. Add the fact that you have your own kitchen to the fact that there are many excellent restaurants in the area and it's silly to eat a meal you don't particularly care for . . . so we didn't. It was okay for the first night when we had driven all day, were tired and didn't know where anything was. On the other hand, you may like it. It's worth a try, especially the first night.

If you like hiking or skiing, it would be an excellent place to stay. Great base for touring too.

Hotel Olympia: Former Club Med hotel

We stayed here for one week. The rooms are very large with not just bathrooms, but bathhalls. In some rooms you could even stay with 6 persons.
The rooms are not very attractively decorated, some beds, 2 chairs, one closet and that's it. The rooms on the back side with odd numbers have a nice view on the skiruns. Only very few rooms have a balcony.
Dinner and breakfast is served as a buffet. Breakfast is very good, only the fresh juice is missing. Dinner is ok, but a bit standard.
During the time of our stay, there were several schoolclasses on a trip and they robbed the buffet as soon as it opened. They were also very loud in the evening, but fortunately they fell asleep around midnight.

Unique Quality: The hotel is said to have a fitnessroom, but we couldn't find it. It is supposed to be in the cellar.
The hotel has a small parking lot of it's own, but you will probably need snow chains to park there. You can also park on the general parking lot.
Behind the reception you will find a small corridor to the back side of the building. Here you will find the Magic Mountains ski-rent and skidepot. The woman behind the counter speaks Dutch (and German of course).
Here you can rent skis and snowboards and leave them at night to dry.
