Travel Tips for Ellmau

Stamp collecting with a difference

by sandysmith

Walking areas often have booklets of the mountain huts in which you can insert their stamp when you arrived there on a hike. These stamps are worth so many points according to distance and height travelled and can be accumulated to gain a walking medal - I found it an incentive when I was faced with a steep climb , to the hut at the top! This is certainly the case in Ellmau where I managed a silver medal in one week

Wilder Kaiser Steg

by sandysmith

A long distance hiking route taking in the Wilder Kaiser (the savage emperor) route. This narrow, but well maintained accessible path is some 35 km long and runs from kufstein to Kirchdorf near St Johann in Tirol. A well known hutte on this path is the Grutten hutte - a target for us to reach for this visit.

Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser

by sandysmith

Scheffau, just a few kilometers down the valley from Ellmau, is the smallest of the mountain villages beneath the Kaiser mountain range. Its farmhouses and districts are scattered on sunny terraces and hills and a popular walk is to the beautiful lake Hintersteinersee where there are even more hiking options.

Watch as the Mountains change their mood

by scottishvisitor

The Wilderkaiser or Emperor mountains are a bright lime rock mountain range in the eastern Alps. The highest point is close to Ellmau known as the Ellmauer stop which rises to 2,344 meters. This is a protected area which covers 280 kilometers producing 38 different types of fern, 940 different wildflowers and 400 different mosses. Here there is a lot of woodland too beech, fir and spuce trees all grow in abundance with sycamore and ash trees also growing at the lower levels. I could never get enough of seeing this great vista so close by, the mountain changed so much with the changing light conditions -the eerie look at dusk, golden and gleaming in the morning light - magical mystical mountains in a magnificent world.

Hohe Salve

by sandysmith

A must in this area is to take the cable-cars from Soll to Hochsoll where you can see wood carvings and local breadmaking and then all the way up to the Hohe Salve (1829m) where a panorama of 70 peaks over 3000 ft can be seen too. This early morning view was one of my lasting memories of this beautiful area on our first visit to Ellmau.
