Mountain gazing
by sandysmith
Just to stand and gaze at the awesome beauty of the mountains. This is a view of the Wilder Kaiser from the Hartkaiser side taken from the top of the Brandstadl gondola station which is situated between Ellmau and Scheffau - the next village along the valley.
Outdoor Chess
by sandysmith
The austrians like their outdoor chess sets - you will often find them in the towns and even in the larger cities like Salzburg. Ellmau is no different and you'll often see locals playing chess in the Kapellen park - just below the little chapel. This park also has tennis courts and a childrens play area.
Bergwelt Panoramaweg I

From the Jochstube there are many options to continue your hike. You can head back down to the Hartkaiserbahn and Ellmau via R?bezahlalm. A longer hike in one direction on path number 11 takes you across lovely pasturelands to Astberg where you can take the gondola down to Going and then a short walk back to Ellmau. Allow about 5 hours for this hike.
Maria-Heimsuchungskapelle
by sandysmith
This beautifully situated chapel is Ellmau's emblem. It was built by Johann Kaisermann in 1721 and contains a baroque altar with an altarpiece depicting "The Visitation of Mary", made by Alois Wagner, a Tirolean from Hall, in 1831.

Stanglwirt is just 1 km from Ellmau !
Stanglwirt is one of the best-known hotel & restaurant of the area around Ellmau and Going and it is also a great excursion from Ellmau. Stanglwirt is also a farm that you can visit, they have horses and a ridinghall and a lot more.
Stangwirt is no cheap restaurant, but a great place to stop and have a look for some great rural architecture.
It was for purpose that I listed Stanglwirt here as a sight, and not as a restaurant or hoteltip, because the main building is a lovely old farmhouse in the local style and I think it is really worth seeing, even when you dont go to eat there !
