Traditional Dress
by scottishvisitor
Passing the Parish Church, the parishioners were just emerging from Mass, we were delighted to see most were dressed in traditional costumes. We asked a family if we could take a picture and they were delighted to oblige calling the children over so they too could be photographed. The style of dress is called a Tracht, the men wear ledenhosen made from a blend of leather, linen and wool, a practical waterproof material. The heavy leather belts are passed down through families a great heirloom for future generations. The women wear pretty blouses over a dirndl = a long pleated skirt over which they also wear an apron if it is tied to the right she is spoken for if however the bow is tied to the left the lady is available. Such a lovely custom to witness :) thank you dear family!!
Bergwelt Panorama II
by sandysmith
The panoramic Bergwelt path (number 13) in the opposite direction to Astberg - towards the Hohe Salve is also very scenic and crosses many meadows. This path contours to Hochbrixen (you could take a gondola down here to Hopfgarten) and eventually takes you to Hochsoll where there is a gondola down to Soll and another one up to the top of the Hohe Salve with its magnificent panorama. Again allow about 5 five hours for this hike -pick a clear day and you'll have stunning views of the alps on both sides.
great local architecture
by globetrott
Take a look around in the very centre of Ellmau und you will see various very good examples of the typical tyrolean farmhouse-architecture. Most of these farmhouses will have that typical small belfry, and the bell was used in order to call everybody for the meals or in order to warn them in case of fire etc.
Get up early & step into a sunrise
by scottishvisitor
I have seen lots of sunsets from my home village, but usually I don't get up early enough in Summer to catch a sunrise! Here in Ellmau things were the opposite, I can't quite work out why but I seemed to be frequently waken just before dawn. Maybe this was due to the early morniing traffic passing by or more likely the birds awakening, whatever, the sunsets I witnessed were truely spectacular. Ah to be alone watching dawn break on an other day - special moments to hold dear.
