Ellmau is an idyllic alpine village in the Tirol region of Austria. It lies at the foot of the impressive Wilder Kaiser mountain range - the "mighty emperor". The Kaiser consists basically of two chains, oriented in west - east direction. The southern chain is called the Wilder (wild) Kaiser, the northern chain is called the Zahmer (tame) Kaiser. These attributes characterize aptly the two chains.
The villagers really do know how to take advantage of their summers and make the most from the warm temperatures. We saw a lot of houses stock piling wood for winter fuel which was left to dry in the warm sun. Solar panels were also used on the roofs to harvest extra energy from the sun's rays for winter use. My two most favourite customs here were airing the bedding through an open window such a joy with all that fresh air and the colourful flowers adorning the balconies. We were told there is much rivalry amongst the villages to see who can produce the best displays of flowers. After winter hues of blacks greys and whites the colourful blooms must provide everyone with a lift of spirit.
This idyllic walk starts from the top of the Hartkaiserbahn and strikes out on the panoramaweg (path number 6) an easy path enjoying the mountains and abundant flora around. After one hour you'll see the Brandstadl (1,649 m) cable car station and gasthof. From here take path 11to the Jochstube (1,670 m) with its little lake. Enjoy a rest here or something to eat before continuing one of the many paths up here. (see next tip)
The Moorsee is a little bathing lake in an idyllic spot just near the centre of Soll - the next village along from Scheffau. From the centre of Soll go right at the mini golf course pass it and take the road that goes up through the forest to the small lake. Should only take about 15 mins to reach it. The moorland lake with the wilder kaiser emperor mountains in the background supposedly makes for a popular reflection pic. Alas I have yet to gret a decent reflection here ;-(

I never like just going from A to B I much prefer taking time, often doubling back if I see some thing which catches my eye. I loved the details of the little windows, some had pretty painted shutters while others featured intricate designs, no copies here everyone was different. I rarely go anywhere without my camera, even going to the place where you can powder your nose can produce a treat for my camera such as the little statue encountered in a hall way of a restaurant. Take your time while wandering around here you may be surprised by what you see just around the next corner. You may be lucky and see the little green fog hidding behind the flowers too.
