Goldenes Dachl
by bugulma
The most famous place in Innsbruck I guess. The building was built in 1420, in Friedrich IV times. It was a Tirol Dukes' Residence here. The gilded copper roof was built later by Maximillian I in 1500. There are 2738 tiles that make up the roof.

Mountains and beautiful scenery

The Maria-Theresien-Strasse is one of the main streets in Innsbruck, famous for its view of the Nordkette mountain which dominates the city. I remember the morning I woke up in my hotel bedroom and having arrived quite late the night before, I was not really prepared for the view that would meet me. I looked out the window and saw rock and and actually felt quite claustrophobic by it. It seemed to rise up forever, going higher and higher.
The city is rich in history. Maximilian 1 based the imperial court here in the 1490's.
Many places of interest are situated in the central precincts of the Altstadt a small area by the river and the Graben, which is a curving street which follows the path of what used to be a moat. This leads up to the Maria-Theresien-Strasse.

Opposite Helbinghaus is the Stadtturm, the city tower. It dates from the 15th century, and from the top you get great panoramic views of the city and out towards the Nordkette mountains. We went up to get a better view of the planes as they come in to land at Innsbruck airport - they fly so low they almost seem to be level with the tower!
See further below for some great shots from up the tower.
Sacher café
by flyfreak
Everybody knows the famous Sacher café in Vienna - which also opened an outlet in Innsbruck in 1999. Locals like the Sacher breakfast for special occasions, tourists will go there to try the famous Sacher cake (which I personally do not think is sooo special - but find out yourself!).
