Travel Tips for Innsbruck

Innsbruck in general

by Nykaenen

Innsbruck was, in 15th century, an administrative, cultural & political centre of the Austrian empire. It was then, during the reign of Emperor Maximilian I, that the famous Goldenes Dachl was built. Well, call me whatever you want, but I even didn't take a picture of it. I just didn't find it anything special. It reminded me of that Juliette's balcony in Verona which I also found overrated. So instead of the Goldenes Dachl, I bring you the photo of Maria-Theresien-Strasse with St. Anna's Statue.

Maria-Theresien-Strasse is the central street of Innsbruck. At one end (south) there's the Triumph Arch. Towards the nothern end there's Annasäule (Statue of St. Anna), built between 1704 & 1706 in commemoration of the Tyroleans' succesful resistance to a Bavarian invasion during the War of Spanish Succession.

Just for the record, Innsbruck is nowadays a city of 150.000 inhabitants, the capital of Tyrol and an unofficial capital for snowboarding in Europe.

The main approach to the historic centre of Innsbruck (the Aldstadt) is Maria-Theresien-Strasse. In the middles of this street stands the Annasaule, erected to commemorate the Tyroleans defeat of the Bavarians in 1703 (on St. Anne's day - hence the name of the column). This view down Maria-Theresien-Strasse, past the Annasaule, over the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof)and on to the Nordkette mountain range is probably the most famous view of Innsbruck

Annasauele

by bugulma

In the middle of Maria Theresien Strasse there is column that has a name Annasauele. It was built in 1704-1706 in honour of July 26 of 1703 when Bavarian troops left Tirol after war finished for Spanish inheritance. St Anna is a patroness of Tirol and her statue is on the top of the column.

Helbling House

by sim1

I found this a remarkable house, so much decorations! It is on the same square as the tower and the golden roof. I was amazed by it, looking down on it from the tower, but also looking up from the square.

It is originally a 15th century Gothic town house. In 1730, the façade was decorated with late Baroque stuccoes and front oriels, created by Anton Gigl.
The building is an outstanding example of bourgeois grandeur in the old town. The net vault of the adjacent arcades is a worthwhile architectural gem as well.

The house is named for Hans Helbling, who run a small café in there in 1833. It was completely refurbished in the years 1979 and 1980.
