Old fashioned Austrian charm with a lively twist
"The Village in the mist"
Mayrhofen has changed greatly since my last visit ( many years ago), hotels have been extended, guest houses, bars and shops. It still has Austrian charm but now caters for a much younger skier and boarder have multiplied.
1hr 30 mins transfer from Innsbruck or Saltzburg airports, Mayrhofen spreads out along the ziller valley with accomodation also spread out over quite a wide area, travel around the village is made easier by skibus.
The village is much lower than the ski areas, therefore access to the Ahornbahn, Penkenbahn, Hobergbahn is via cable car/gondola and at certain times of the day (especially at the Penken) it can be quite a wait.
Many restaurants to choose from, several supermarkets Billa & Spar, couple of banks and a post office and many bars and nightclubs.
Ski hire( read my tip ) and ski clothing shops are varied and many
Even with all the bars, clubs, and the ski shops catering for wealthy Russian tourists, Mayrhofen still offers typical alpine charm and because the village is spread out, you are not on top of any noisy pubs or clubs.
