Strass Hotel: Main hotel in central Mayrhofen

Strass Hotel in Mayhofer is actually a group of several hotels, all catering to the winter ski tourists, mainly groups; this report is about the two where my wife and I stayed – the Strass Hotel and Sport Hotel, both located on the main street.

The rooms in Strass are comfortable and fairly new, with shower and toilette, a very comfortable bed, plenty of cupboards and drawers, a small safe in one of the cupboards, and everything is spotlessly clean. The rooms that we stayed in had a nice balcony, looking over the cable car station and a beautiful view of the Alps; the view of the entrance to the cable car is interesting during the first day of stay, but then it becomes a kind of nuisance. On same side of the hotel, at the ground floor, there is the local pub, also owned by the hotel. Between 16:00 and 21:00 hours, the pub puts on a good and extremely loud music. Our first room there was on the first floor and had the floor, the walls, and practically everything shaking at the rhythm of the music and making the stay in the room during these hours absolutely impossible. The other room was on the same side, but on the last (fourth) floor and farer away from the pub; during the music time, the noise was bearable for music lovers like us, but for others it might definitely not be. During the evening, youngsters gather around the pub entrance, and so do several taxis and buses, but the noise is again – bearable.

Strass Sport Hotel seems to be older, but the beds are new and comfortable – same as in Strass Hotel, and the rooms are more spacious – actually very roomy, there is a bath room and the toilette is separate – a nice touch. Our room was looking over the main street.

The hotels share several dinner rooms and parking lots; the dinner room has a nice touch: each guest is assigned a table, so you can arrive whenever you wish and have your table. Our deal included breakfast and half board, both very nice, even for connoisseurs like us. The only remark is about the local house wine, which is of poor quality and quite expensive.

The Internet access is available only from the lobby area and quite expensive (2 Euro per half hour). The rooms are also supposed to have Internet access (at same price), but all my attempts to operate it failed, so every time I wanted to check my mail, I had to put my clothes on, and to schlep myself and my laptop to the lobby to join the other Internet addicts; the management ought to do something about it. Another minor hitch is with the elevators: there is only one such elevator for each block of rooms, used also by the hotel staff, and sometimes the waiting is maddening, especially during the "rush hours". The hotel has also a SPA and a sauna, but we didn’t use them.

Otherwise both hotels are nice and while the regular prices are quite stiff, our deal was good value for money.

Aparthotel Konig: Hospitality

I didnt stay here but I know it looks a wonderful place to holiday, situated in one of the best locations in Mayrhofen with unspoilt views over the Zillertal mountains, with the Ahorn and Penken lifts just minutes away. Sporting facilities include an adventure swimming pool, tennis courts ( ice skating in winter ) sauna, solaruim, steam bath and gym. All rooms are equipped with bath or shower,WC, telephone, radio, cable TV safe and a south-west facing balcony.

Almhof: 3 Star guest house

Lovely bedroom with en-suite, two windows and a glass door leading onto a double sized balcony that wrapped around the house so you got sunshine from 9 in the morning until 6 at night. Deck chairs and patio set on the balcony. TV in room. Great outside space at the front of the house with large pond and decking, great place to sit after a busy day on the piste!!!!!
Board was bed and breakfast which was served in a nice dinig room and consisted of bread rolls, jams, cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit with orange juice and tea / coffee.

Plenty of mountain lodges around

Walks of approximately 2 to 3 hours on good paths lead to several mountain lodges as for example Olpererhütte, Friesenberghaus and Furtschaglhaus which are excellent bases for more advanced tours-

Unique Quality: The lodges are open under much of the opening time of the Schlegeis road and offer basic accommodation and meals and are run by different sectiöns of the German or Austrian Alpenverein (Alpine Club).

Mariandl und Sanna: A good nights sleep, breakfast and more

Mariandl and Sanna are two seperate buildings, part of the same pension. In march 2005 I spent 6 nights (19,50 euro per person per night) in a double room with private facilities in the Sanna building. The room was basic, nothing fancy, and clean. The rooms on the frontside of the building had access to a large balcony but our room was located in the back of the building and had a private balcony. All rooms were non-smoking, so for smokers the balcony would be great. Breakfast was served in the Mariandl building a few meters away, but we didn't find the walk ouside uncomfortable at all.

In the boilerroom there are racks to dry your ski/snowboard gear.

The thing that makes me want to recommend this pension to others are the owners. Maria Müller and a man who I suppose was her husband, were very knowledgeable about the ski areas. They informed us every morning at breakfast which area would be the best choice for that day, taking weather conditions into account.

Unique Quality: A great budget bonus is the communal kitchen that is available to the guests so you won't have to go out for dinner every night.

The location of the pension was also very good; just five minutes walking distance from the Penkenbahn connecting you to the Mayrhofen ski slopes. The town centre is also five minutes away.

Strass Hotel: Great Location

Brilliant hotel right at the bottom on the ski lifts. Stayed 1/2 board at Easter. Food was great with wide selection and excellent salads. Attached to the hotel is the Ice Bar a great place for a few drinks dance and sing after skiing closes at 8 pm. Later there is a disco and late bar for the party animals. Great for the kids as well

Unique Quality: Don't miss the Ice Bar
