Great resort - will go back again
We have just come back from a week holiday in Niederau/ Hotel Harfenwirt - booked with Lastminuteinghams lakes & mountains on HB basis. Hoping my review will help other fellow travellers.
It was a lovely quiet resort – beautiful Wildschonau valley. Picturesque village nestling in the hills. Unspoiled and preserved. An ideal place for relaxing and walking. Excursions were also available through the tour operators and local travel agent at a very reasonable price. Paragliding is also available if you are keen to ‘fly’. There is a gondola just a couple of mins walk from the hotel. The view on the top was just superb. Another cable car is about 7km away from the hotel, takes you even higher – you can just stay at the top all day and scan the panoramic view from all directions. The price is a lot cheaper than what we pay for an attraction in the UK. Two supermarkets are also available about 500m away from the hotel.
Nice location. We were given a room in the nearby annexe. Our room was nice, has good views, clean and plenty of space - cleaned everyday too. For just 10 Euros for the whole week, you can use the fridge, cooker & kettle. Note no soap or shampoo were available!. If you can, get a room in the main hotel as the view was much much better than the annexe, and for breakfast & dinner you need to go to the main hotel which is about 100m away.
Breakfast was OK – bread roll, ham, cheese, butter, jam etc. everyday – no eggs or fresh fruits!! Three course dinner (and salad buffet) - it was really good. Got different main dish each day – you can choose from two non-veg & one veg. Sometimes it was a bit salty otherwise no complain.
Friendly, nice & helpful. They speak English too. The service was also good.
Hotel Owner – Herbert:
I really can’t write this review without mentioning him. He greets & chats with guests everyday. The man controls everything including reception! He plays harp and very good at it too.
Remember the check-in time of the hotel is 2pm. We arrived at the hotel about 11.30 am and were made to wait more than 2hrs to check-in. Not very pleased at all, but it was not Herbert’s fault – the Inghams people were aware of this but didn’t tell us in advance when the booking was made.
My friend & his wife also stayed in the same annexe. There were two water leaks in their bathroom and reported to Herbert twice. He promised to look into it but did nothing – very very disappointed. We then needed to speak to the Inghams rep to get them to move to another room.
My verdict on the hotel:
For the price (£249 pp) paid we paid (which included flight, transfers, room, BF and dinner), it was a worthy holiday and we enjoyed it well. Like other travellers we will go back to the resort again & again, but Hotel Harfenwirt will be my second choice if I can’t find an alternative one. Of course I may have to pay a bit more!
Third visit and it just gets better!
Just back from our third visit to the Harfenwirt and well satisfied with the break which was favoured with excellent weather on 5 out of 7 days. Even on the not so good days we found things to do. Herbert was his usual gruff but likeable, friendly, workaholic self and his harp recital up the road in his sister's small hostelry was just brilliant. Don't miss it. He told us he enjoyed it himself because we all joined in and had fun. The last one he didn't because there was no audience participation, "It vos like a chirch," he said.
As usual the food was excellent, the staff friendly and the rooms clean and well serviced. Ours even had a working fridge. Our balcony looked westwards along the valley and caught the afternoon and evening sun, just perfect for relaxing at the end of a day walking in the beautiful hills all around. Even if you do end up in the farm annexe up the road don't worry, it's excellent too with even larger rooms and a small kitchen.
Tip - If you consider doing the 35 Euro Innsbruk excursion with a visit to the Swarovski Crystal factory, don't. The visit is to a factory shop, not the workshops. Instead catch the 9.15 bus from outside the hotel which takes you down to the train station in Worgl and the 10am train to Innsbruk (40 mins) A group ticket is cheapest. There is an excellent multi-floored Swarovski shop in Innsbruk just along the road from the famous golden roof. Total cost for the return journey approx. 14 Euros.
Also for that day in the hills either the Spar or MPreiss supermarkets will do you filled rolls as will the wee shop opposite the Gondola. The Mpreiss has excellent lunchtime snacks in a small restaurant with spectacular views through floor to ceiling windows.
At the last minute price we got it for it would be churlish to find fault in the Harfenwirt in any way, even if there were any to find.
herbert the harpist
Just arrived back from Austria. We had a great time, beautiful village, we stayed in the annex behind Herberts pub, it was new clean, and very comfortable. We went to the hotel for our meals, which is just down the road from the pub. The meals were adequate, Herbert was always there talking to his guests, the staff were very hard working, Maria ,Herberts sister was mainly at the pub, but very often was helping at the hotel as well, She was very nice and very obliging, we sometimes needed a lunch, we had that in the Hotel a couple of times, it was good hot and fresh. Herbert loved his Harp, he would give a concert as he called it up in the pub a few times, I have never heard a Harpist play Rock around the Clock, but we had a good sing song, he really loves his music. All in All it was a very good holiday at The Harfenwirt. Would recommend anyone go there. The Gondola ride just below the hotel was great, lovely views, do go to the Chapel up there, and the Cheese farm. The local railway is great for getting anywhere. Nice meals also in Hotel Austria, it was a pity the waiter had never learnt to smile!!!!
Herbert - "Love him or hate him"
Having read other reviews of the Harfenwirt and its owner Herbert we were expecting a "Fawlty Towers" experience but thought what the hell we are only paying £199 half board in Austrian Tirol - the holiday will be what we make it.
Although we found the deal via Travelzoo and booked via [--] the operator was Inghams with more than 50% saving on their brochure price.
In the airport we were a little concerned that we had joined a SAGA tour, lots of pop socks and rainmates! but the flight was good and the reception at the airport by Inghams was excellent.
Arriving at Harfenwirt we did have to wait before being allocated our room. We found this no problem and we were only too happy to have a cheese& ham toastie and coffee - reasonably priced.
We were allocated a room in one of Herberts annexe (see photo) he took us their in a miini bus but it was only 100yds from the hotel. The room was big (4 beds) with bath/shower - all very clean with great views over the mountains.
At dinner Herbert allocated us a table with 2 other couples, we would keep this arrangement for the week. Fortunately it worked well and we got on very well together - we had many happy walks and intend to stay in touch back in UK. I suppose it could be a pain if you don't mix and want to keep yourselves to yourselves, but Herbert does try to match appropriately and he has been doing it for 33 yrs, we think successfully.
The food is Excellent. 4 courses, soup, salad table, choice of 2 mains and sweet. Breakfast is usual continental, rolls cheese ham, jams etc - all great buffet style.
Niederau is a good location for walking, we went on 1 excursion proper to the Hinterlux Glacier. This was a treat not to be missed but remember the gondola/chairlift is 21 euros per person on top of the excuriosn price but its well worth it (note final stage is open chair - safe)
We did 2 organised walks with the rep (joining with the rep from Crystal Active) one with 16 people about 6 miles relatively easy for fit people. The other was with 8 people up the big mountain Grosser Biel - quite tough at various points but rewarding.
Overall a great holiday!
A great, value for money holiday at the 'half wit' hotel
We have just returned from a week stay at the harfenwirt. It was a cheap deal so wasnt expecting a lot. We had a fab time to be honest. Niedereu is a beautiful area but is very quiet. A few bars to go to in the evening but nothing great. After a fun packed day walking or sight seeing it is nice to just chill out with a few drinks of an evening. The area is great for walking or sightseeing. We went on trips with the tour company and on the train from Wogel, local bus is great too.
We stayed in the annexe next to the farm. we wasn't impressed at first but we ended up really liking it. We had a balcony with a great view and it was only a short walk to the hotel for meals. We actually liked not being in the hotel as the room was more like our own apartment. It was a bit dated but was clean, spacious and quiet.
Herbert did make us wait an hour for our rooms which is annoying as we had been up since 2am for the flight. We only got our room at 2pm. It was obviously a money making ploy, however dont let this spoil your holiday.
The meals were great especially for the money we paid for half board. We couldnt complain.
Herbert the owner, well what can i say, strange!! very hard working and did seem to try to talk to everyone but also came across as quite rude and abrupt at times. He is a bit of a jeckll and hyde. He really amused us and made our holiday more interesting as we have never come across anyone quite like him before. He is a bit odd but dont let this put you off booking here. Just take 'Herbie' as we called him, with a pinch of salt.
We will return in the future, probably in the winter time for skiing as it looks great for beginners.
Great hotel pity about the weather
Have just returned from a last minute holiday to Niederau staying in the Harfenwirt. First impressions were of bags of tyrolean charm, clean and welcoming. Met by the owner Herbert who was certainly a character but also extremelly friendly and charming. We were offered a choice of room, both of which were exeptionally clean and comfortable with the most amazing views across the mountains. The rooms were cleaned daily to a high standard although the use of kettles was not allowed which meant spending lots in the hotel bar. We were allocated a table on our first evening by Herbert with another family. As there seemed to be not choice in were we sat we felt lucky to have been placed with a great family who had children the same age as ours. There was a chice of evening meal, with a daily soup and salad cart. Plent of fresh produce used. The only slight disappointment was the breakfast. Its great if you like that continental thing but there was still limited choice. Herbert chatted to us at every meal and on our sons birthday he sang happy birthday to him (very loudly) at dinner and gave him a huge icecream. The hotel runs a tyrolean evening every week which in our opinion was very overpriced so we sat out on the balcony and sang along from outside. The hotel is a few minutes walk from the village, good oportunity for an evening stroll after dinner. Overall we had a wonderful room in a great hotel. Herbert may seem a little exhausting at times but he evidently works incredibly hard to make your stay a great one. Our children felt right at home and spent many hours playing wizby in the adjoyning field. I would highly recommend this hotel to families.
We booked this holiday purely because of the price, we weren't originally planning to go away but at £199 for a week half board, including transfers we couldn't turn it down. Overall we were pleasently surprised. We stayed in a room in the main hotel and the views from our balcony were amazing. It was great to have our own private balcony as this is apparently very rare in Austria. We enjoyed sitting there in the evening watching the paragliders jumping of the mountain opposite. If you go you must try the paragliding it is really cool and relaxing and not as scary as you might think.
The room was very clean but in need of updating. The staff were all friendly and helpful, including Herbert, who looks a bit like uncle Fester from the Adams family. He referred to us as "the young people" as everyone else in the resort was middle aged or older.
Breakfast was very basic, 3 types of cereal, 1 type of bread roll, ham, cheese and preserves and that's it. The main meals were very nice although you only got a choice of 2 mains so not good if you are a fussy eater. Starter was usually soup and there was a salad buffet and a small dessert each night. We were allocated a table with other guests and had to sit there for the rest of the holiday. Luckily we got on with everyone but this might be a problem if you don't.
There is a severe lack of things to do in the evenings as the bars and clubs are only open during ski season. However, the locals use the Dorfstuben which was OK despite the grumpy bar maid and O'Malleys was open Friday and Saturday nights.
Overall, nice hotel, very beautiful, peaceful location and bargain price!
Just arrived back from a great holiday! Have stayed in resort before and enjoyed it just as much this time. Read previous reviews about hotel and was apprehensive but found that the hotel was clean, the food was good and we had fantastic views from our balcony. The host of the hotel, Herbert, really made the holiday especially with his skill of playing Beatles songs with the harp - an experience not to be missed!. We were seated with other holiday makers for meals but this worked out well as we met some lovely people. We found all the staff hard working, pleasant and friendly. Already booking for next year.
This hotel was very friendly with your own personal waiter/waitress. Ours was Anton, a Croatian. The owner (Herbert) owns another hotel closeby but instead of employing other staff he takes great pride in serving dinners along with his other staff. he plays the harp for some evening entertainment . local excitement is paragliding which my husband and young sons took part in. very friendly people and what a stunning beautiful area of the world. going to slovenia next as i have heard it too is beautiful. keep up the good work herbert! May you be busy all year round. Another thank you to Inghams for arranging holiday. first time using them and will use them again. professional and friendly
