Hotel Alpina: Formal hotel in the alps

We stayed here for two weeks in April 2004. After staying in an apartment and having to cater for yourself it was great going to a demi-pension place where breakfast and dinner is included.

The Platzer family have been here for a long time and Alpina is one of the larger 4-star hotels here. Located in the 'mezzanine' area of the village - a little way above the main village area it has all the amenities one could ask for in a hotel.

We stayed in a two bedroom apartment. There are no kitchens in any of the rooms and this was one of the larger rooms. To get to the ski lifts in the morning you can push a little bit and get to the two Gaisberg and Roskar chairs or go the other way and catch the rope tow over to the Feskogl gondola. In Spring when the snow is heavy you need to push a little way up a slight hill to get to the hotel at the end of the day.

There is in-house Internet access if you have a laptop, but the rates are pretty expensive. The in-room phones don't allow you to dial out with a modem, so you don't have any choice.

All the staff are friendly but the place can be a little formal during meal times. All in all, highly recommended if you want a large 4-star hotel experience.

Hochegg: Friendly family apartment

We stayed here for 3 weeks in March 2004 and a further 10 days in late April 2004. This was our first time in Obergurgl and our friends had recommended Hochegg to us.

Wolfy and Martha Aste are the owners of this lovey place. There are a rooms and three apartments. The difference is that the apartments have a small kitchen. We stayed in Peilstein and Kirchenkar apartments. Both are great. The rooms are modern, having been rebuilt last year so the showers are hot and strong the heating first rate.

Wolfy was the head ski examiner for Tirol for years and there are three other ski instructors in the family - all living at this place. Andrä, his son, is the youngest ski instructor examiner in Austria's history. Everyone is very friendly.

If you're after an apartment, this should be high on your list.
