Rattenberg old town is a predentrian area, with no access for vehicles, so you can wander around from shop to shop withoug the hustle and bustle of the traffic. There are many interesting shops, mainly catering for the tourist. Naturally, there are many shops displaying the local glassware and crystal.
High Tech is planned to make the Sun shining
The total absence of any sunshine in Rattenberg from November until February is due to the steep rocky Castle hill immediately south of the only one street of the city. This total shadow over such a long period makes many people to become depressive and therefore the population is steadily decreasing.
But there is a solution at the horizon. The village Kramsach at the other banks of the river Inn enjoys splendid sunshine even under the shortest days of the winter. Therefore it is planned to set up there - only about 500 meters from the tiny city - a system of heliostates, huge mirrors following the sun and the sunlight will be brought into the city by a sophisticated system of reflectors. The estimated cost for this is about two million Euro, corresponding quite exactly the total budget of the city of Rattenberg of a full year. The project is already elaborated, assessed by groups of international experts and has got even the EUREKA status.
It can be expected that in a few years the sun will shine in Rattenberg even in Winter.
Dont miss Kramsach - it's just 3km from Rattenberg
Once that you are in Rattenberg, Dont miss Kramsach - it's in a distance of just 3km and has a really interesting museum :
The Museum Tiroler Bauernhoefe
It is a great collection of tyrolean farmhouses that were taken from all parts of Tirol, including South-Tirol that is a part of Italy nowadays. These houses were rebuilt again in groups like small villages and you can walk through and take a look inside the houses that are fully functional with all the furniture and machineries. There are partly farm-animals as well, so this museum is also a great place to visit for children !
The museum is open for visitors :
from Palm-Sunday (=1 week before easter) till October 31st
daily from 09.00am till 06.00pm, last entry is at 05.00pm !
adults pay 5,50 euros

Brandenberg with nice canyon
North of Kramsach at the sunny side of the Lower Inn Valley you pass first two small lakes (Reintaler lakes) and from there the road leads to the tiny remote village of Brandenberg. At the northern end of this village ends a nice and picturesque canyon. A hike of about two hours along the river shows you the most spectacular parts of it. At both ends of this walk you find convenient Gasthäuser. The path is well kept and only open from late spring into the autumn.
high above the roofs of Rattenberg
The town of Rattenberg looks great from the castle, high above the roofs of this small town. You simply have to step up the path next to the trainstation that will take you to the castle. Another way to get to the viewpoint is to take the elevator of the Kulturhaus that will take you to the platform that you can see in my 4th photo.
