Reutte by train

by phaagensen

I am planning a first time visit to Reutte. Coming from Rothenburg on my Eurail pass. Eurail map stops in Fussen. How do I get to Reutte by train, or should I just plan on catching the bus in Fussen?

Not sure which Rothenburg you mean but you will find all train times in English on:

Hi
I take it you mean Rothenburg ob der Tauber, that famous walled city south of Wurzburg? If so, there is a train that goes direct to Reutte but it goes via Ulm and does not go to Fussen (a more express route does not stop at Ulm). If you want to go to Fussen (Neuschwanstein castle?) then there is a OBB (Austrian railways) bus from just outside Fussen's train station. If you book your ticket straight to Reutte, the bus fare is included.

There is a Rothenburg in Switzerland as well, so let us know if that's the one you are leaving from.

Hope this helps,
John

"reutte"

when visiting fussen germany and the neuschwanstein castle an alternative place to stay is reutte austria. reutte is a short drive over the austrian boarder from fussen. a couple of years ago i visited fussen over the weekend and all the hotels were booked so i drove to reutte in austria and found this wonderful inn (pictured) in central reutte. the gasthof schwarger adler is over 500 years old but with modern facilities. the family that owned the inn were very friendly and spoke perfect english. but the real surprise was the inn was very inexpensive and served a great breakfast. it was one of those pleasant surprises when you get off the beaten track. reutte is a tiny town and you can see all the sights in an hour. there are a couple of restraurants and a bar downtown. near by is the ruins of ehrenberg castle.

an interesting historical tidbit about reutte, in 1945 the americans captured the nazi rocket scientist wernher von braun there. later, von braun became the "father" of the american space program.
