Hochzeiger
"Skiing at the Hochzeiger"
After we went to the Pitztaler Glacier in 2003, we decided to go skiing again in 2004. This time we chose the are of the Hochzeiger, at the entrance of the Pitztal as our destination. We rented an appartment in the village Wenns. From there you can start at the Hochzeiger Bergbahn in about 20 minutes.
The Hochzeiger is not as high as the Glacier, but the skiing pistes are even better. In total about 50 km's of pistes in black, red and blue varieties take you across the mountain into the valley, where the village of Jerzens begins.
Everyone can have their way of skiing there. They have easy pistes for starters up to so called 'Buckelpisten' for very experienced ski or snowboard fanatics.
The skiing season here starts in October and ended this year on the 18th of April. That also was our last day. The snow-quality was really bad at the end of the pistes, but higher on the mountains skiing was still good.
We hope to visit the last area in the Pitztal, the Rifflsee next year, but Hochzeiger will probably still be our favourite then.
