Any Season for Westendorf, Austria
"Getting There"
Westendorf is off the beaten track but can easily be reached by train or road. The first time I traveled there was in December 1972 and I took a train from Munich. The train station is just the right distance out of the village, so that it's not noticeable but is sufficiently close for you to walk in if you are traveling light or you can get a cab. This last time, I drove in with the family in a 6 berth camper. No matter what time of day or night you arrive, you experience a very special feeling on arrival. It's almost as if you know all the people of the town and belong there. I would be prepared to spend every day for months just arriving there with different people so that I can witness them appreciate the experience. My first choice for time of arrival is late evening by train with a clear sky in winter. Walking in the snow under the huge umbrella of sky and planets and stars and mountains is humbling and magical and your whole wonderful vacation kind of flashes through your mind before you even experience it. The village is about 15 kilometres from Kitzbuhel and within easy access of the main Munich - Innsbruck freeway but the perfect distance into the Alps to allow you to experience the true feeling of Austria.
