St. Gallenkirch - shopping and more
by vtveen
As said in my other tip St. Gallenkirch is a rather small village without the fancy shops in some other wintersport villages. There are just a couple of ordinary shops to fulfil the daily purchases of the local people and tourists.
St. Gallenkirch has just one supermarket, bakery, flower shop, newspaper booth and a (herb) chemist. 'Of course' you will find a couple of sports shops to rent or buy your ski/board gear.
Not quite a shopping paradise !!
There are also two banks - with both an ATM - along the main road in the village. There is also an ATM at the gondola station of the Valisera Bahn.
St. Gallenkirch offers a couple of restaurants, but our two favourites are Därfli and Muntanella.
Silvretta Montafon - large ski area
by vtveen
Silvretta Montafon (the former Silvretta Nova) is one of the largest ski area's in Austria with about 115 piste kilometres.
We never had any problem with snow, but nowadays there are a lot of snow-making facilities. So till spring you can return to the valley on your ski's.
The ski runs are divided in:
- 25 km 'black' runs
- 45 km 'red' runs
- 40 km 'blue' runs
Next to these ski runs are several so called 'ski routes'.
There is one ski pass for all the ski areas in Montafon. Off course you can bring your own equipment, but there are several shops with rental services for ski's as well as snowboards and boots.
Don't forget the snow chains for your car !!!
winter walks in the mountains
by vtveen
Of course it is possible to walk in the valleys and on (winter) walkways in the villages of Montafon. But nowadays there are four signposted and safe walking tracks high in the mountains of the Silvretta Montafon ski area. They are heading to a couple of viewing points with great views of the impressive mountain scenery.
Easy accessible by a gondola ride from St. Gallenkirch to Valisera:
two tracks of 1 and 2 km's.
Or from Gaschurn to Nova Stoba:
also two tracks of about 2 and 2,5 km's.
It is possible to get special 'sun passes' for a visit to one of the mountain restaurants and to make a walk. It is possible to rent snow shoes at the shops at the mountain stations.
