City Discovery Tours in Vienna
by Mooball
Has anybody taken the Romantic Danube Valley tour with the above Company? My partner and I wish to do a trip like this and would like to know how it is. There is only 2 reviews on their website. Thanks

the tour itself is one of the best daytrips you can do from Vienna ! I dont know about that company, BUT you can organize it all also by yourself.
By train to Melk, then by ship to Krems (although I would recommend to get out at Duernstein and skip the last few km to Krems on the boat) Take a walk in Duernstein, get the train to Krems, stay some time there and return to Vienna.
starting- and end-trainstation are NOT the same !!!

this is in german only unfortunately, but it is a special offer :
The Train from Vienna to Melk
the ship at 01.50pm from Melk to Krems (arr. 03.35pm)
and any train back to Vienna.
total price is 46,60 p.p.
---
another possibility:
Einfach-Raus-ticket is 28 euros for 2-5 people on the total, IF you take trains after 09.00am and the ticket is valid untill midnight for all the slow trains of that area. From Krems to Vienna will be SLOW trains ONLY anyway.
a good direct train is 09.14am leaving Vienna arr. in Melk 10.32am
ship is 20 euro p.p.
so you pay 34 euros p.p. for ship&train

Thank you Michael for your help - sorry to take so long to do so. I have found a trip from Vienna to Durnstein which sounds very good. Departs Vienna around 8.30 has 2 hour stop in Durnstein then back to Vienna - arriving about 9.00pm. Either way, we shall do it ourselves - I really do not like organised trips such as would be with City Discovery. Thank you. This is on a Sunday only.

Do you have a link for this trip ???
I have the very bad feeling that you get the WRONG thing !!!
Duernstein is great and 2 hours should be enough. But WHERE do you spend the rest of the time ??
I really hope it is NOT a tour by ship from Vienna to Duernstein and back to Vienna, because all the way on the Danube from Vienna to Duernstein is a bit booooring, its getting nice for the last few km from Krems to Duernstein and you totally miss the best part of the Danube-valley between Duernstein and melk !!!

I was getting Krems mixed up with Melk!!! The company is ddsg-blue-danube.at and the price at Euro 29.50 sounded good. However on reading your earlier reply the option of the Einfach-Raus- ticket seems a good way to go. Thanks.
Also what is your opinion on types of travel tickets for our 12 days? We are staying in Ungargasse so I guess we would walk over to the innerstadt via the stadtpark the first couple of days to see around there. Is the Vienna Card worth purchasing? My partner will qualify for a senior discount, I'm too young by a couple of years!
Thank you for your help.

Further to the ddsg link - I had another look and their Wachau Valley Cruise sounds really wonderful and just what we would love to do on hopefully, a lovely sunny day.

ddsg-blue-danube.at and brandner, they both make the same cruises and even at exately the same time.

Getting Tickets For New Year's Concert
by aliante1981
With just over 2000 places available, New Year Concert is bound to be one of the hardest classical music concerts to get tickets for.
The official procedure is as follows: you make a request a year in advance (from January 2 till January 23) at the orchestra's web site, indicating your price band (from 170 to 550 Euros). Then a draw is performed, and typically you have 1 in 12 chances of being selected.
Of course, you can buy the tickets afterwards. From what I've seen, the cheapest (reputable) prices were 370 Euros, and the most expensive surpassed 5000 Euros.
Take the "A" train...I mean U-Bahn
by BLewJay
In Vienna (as well as in many cities in Europe), the ability to move from one part of the city to the other in a seamless fashion is a wonderful thing. Effective, efficient, reliable, the U-Bahn (Lines 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6) are the way to go, especially if you are a visitor to the city.
day-excursions to Salzburg
by globetrott
Day-excursions to Salzburg are possible from Vienna, BUT the train takes about 3 hours one way. In Salzburg most of the sights are in the centre and 6-8 hours should be enough there, unless you care for the real "Sound-of-music-tour" including places outside of Salzburg, like Mondsee with the wedding-chappel of the movie .
"Vienna Sightseeing" offers such a fullday-tour by buses each Tuesday and saturday ( and also at thursday&sunday in summer) for 99 Euros a person and you will see some places INside of Salzburg, where that famous movie was made, you will see the Festspielhaus, Peterskirche & cemetery, the birthplace of Mozart, the residence of the bishop and Wolfgangsee & Fuschlsee when driving back.
These tours start at 07.15a.m., will last the whole day and are 99 Euros
between march 26th and nov.1st the tours will be Tue/Thu/Da/Su
between nov 5th and march 31st each Tue&Sat. An ordinary return-ticket Vienna-Salzburg-Vienna by train will be not a lot less than the price of that bus-tour, BUT in case that you have an EUROpass/Eurail or a similar ticket it might make sense to do it on your own. Also in case that you intend not to go back to Vienna anyway...
catch a glimpse of the awesome...
by Krystynn
catch a glimpse of the awesome Rathaus. Noticed the Rathaus' Middle Tower? Well, it stands at almost 100 meters high and it's topped with a 3.40-meter 'Rathausmann'. Very interesting! Ah, Rathaus Park is also worth seeing with two spouting fountains and several monuments built in honor to Waltz composers, Johann Strauss and Joseph Lanner amongst others.
Musikfilm Festival
by Fam.Rauca
Every July and August the square in front of Vienna's Town Hall turns into a bustling hub for music-lovers.
Every evening crowds flock to watch concerts and opera and operetta performances broadcast on a huge video screen.
Just as popular are the food stalls that take you on a culinary journey across the globe - Mexican, Japanese, Greek and Austrian specialities can all be found.
