Staying at the Schottenstift Monastery Guesthouse was the single best thing about my trip to Vienna. I can't imagine any hotel which would have pleased me so much or any more perfect location. The Schottenstift was founded in 1155 and while the gueshouse is relatively modern, the entry through the vast door and up the winding staircase is staight out of some medieval knight-templars tale. There is one triple room here and it is worth booking for two, just for the view. Directly opening on to the street, every morning I could throw open the windows and savour all the sights and sounds of Freyung and the Christmas market. Waking up to pealing bells was a constant pleasure and coming home each evening to this warm, other-worldy haven right in the centre of everything was a thrill every time. Breakfast is included in the price and while it does not include any hot foods ( like bacon and eggs) there are loads of cheese, salami, breads, cereals, fruit etc. Rates for 2007 are : Single with bath and breakfast, 60 Euro Double " " " " 90 Euro Triple " " " " 108 There is a small extra charge for staying just one night. The Benedictushaus is open to all. though not very many people know about it. Bookings through the website.
Firstly it's part of an old Benedictine monastery and you can hear the monks chanting sometimes when coming in or out. Seconly, its location is perfect:right in the centre of the city, close to the Hofburg, Stepandsom and all the other attractions. In short it's different, atmospheric and a completely new experience. | | | | Hostel Ruthensteiner: Good Hostel Near the Westbanhof | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Continuing with my hostel life, I arrived in Vienna at 1 in the morning. With everything closed and no one to ask directions, I was a little apprehensive. However, following my guidebooks directions to Hostel Ruthensteiner could not have been easier. The hostel is located about 1kilometer away from the Westbanhof, goping away from the city. It was extremely clean, friendly and convient to the city via the metro or by the more pleasant walk through the beautiful streets of Vienna. Do not pay for the breakfast, as it was vastly insufficient and over-priced; the only negative about this hostel.

 | | | | Hotel Kolbeck: Comfortable and convenient Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I found the Hotel Kolbeck (Photo 1) by trawling through seemingly endless accommodation websites. What were my criteria? Essentially, a place that was clean, comfortable, well-run, with breakfast and preferably free internet, and at about the two star price range. It also needed to be convenient to shops, restaurants and transport to the city. (Those are my usual starting point – NB: your needs and priorities may be different). I’m glad to say that the Kolbeck admirably met our criteria. It also had very pleasant staff. The one small negative, which I’d discerned from my web-searches was that, being in an older (1848) building it had no lift: climbing the stairs to our second floor room was not onerous and probably did us both good! Because of our airline flight we arrived at 0800 – long before any possible check-in. Murat, the gentleman on the counter, kindly took our bags into the luggage room, offered us breakfast (we’d just had some at the airport, so declined), then gave us a map and an excellent briefing on getting about using Vienna’s public transport system. Our double room (which overlooked the pedestrianised plaza alongside) was fairly plain but newly-refurbished, spotlessly clean, with a good ensuite and reasonably quiet (Photos 2,3). Breakfast (which we enjoyed outdoors when possible)(Photo 4) was quite reasonable, and all our other criteria were well-met: restaurants and shops aplenty were nearby, the tram passes the door and the main metro line into the city was about 200 metres distant. I should note that this is more a “working/retail” rather than a “tourist/upmarket” area, but it always felt respectable, safe and comfortable.
Free internet (with quite good speeds, but only one computer) is available to residents on a ‘shared’ basis. The reception area (Photo 5) has a distinctly old-world charm and a small display of memorabilia about the hotel, which has been run by the same family/family company for over a century, plus a photo of Franz Kolbeck who was founder in 1903. The ultimate test: would we stay there again? Definitely. | | | | Ambassador Hotel Vienna: AN EXCELLENT AMBASSADOR FOR VIENNA! Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: | | | | |
The Ambassador has long been on my list of places to say. When I first saw it a good few years back it was certainly impressive - a Grande Dame who had seen better days but who had a sense of style that wouldn't go away. Since then, the 'noble rot' has long since disappeared and after the completion of a major renovation in 2001 the Ambassador reinvented itself and gained an air of confidence last seen when she was built in 1898...and extraordinarily, the current owners were born only a little further on in 1926. It is boasts a splendid central location on the main shopping street but on a busy Summer's evening those with rooms directly overlooking Karntnerstrasse might find things a touch noisy with the windows wide open. That being said, the Ambassador's other side faces Neuer Markt, and a room here looking out on the Donnerbrunnen fountain would be lovely. I didn't get to eat in the restaurant but it has an good reputation and an open aspect allowing you to view the chefs at work. Past guests have included Lehár, Schumann, Marlene Dietrich, Nehru, Mark Twain , Roosevelt, Nehru and Josephine Baker - I' m sure they can't wait for you and me to sign in too! A grand stay assured!!

 | | | | Hotel Sacher Wien: Hotel and Coffee House. How Can You Go Wrong? Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: | | | | |
First, it should be clear by viewing the price of the hotel that I have not stayed here. BUT!! I have had their coffee in the coffee house that is attached, and is the reason for this place being famous. So, I thought I would research it a bit and then write a tip on it. This is a top-notch hotel apparently. It is rated a 5 star hotel by most internet sites I visited. I can tell you that it is in a prime location, not far from the Stephansdom, Viennese State Opera and metro stations, making everything accessible. Plus, did I tell you about their cake... Room rates for a double start at 229 Euro, up to 1,300 Euro for a suite, per night.
