When I first visited Vienna I was a student, and my accommodation was at a Studentenheim, ie a students' residence. Now I have an apartment in the same street of that Studentenheim, and I have noticed it is still there, but renovated. There are several more such residences in that nice and central area, near the Parliament and the Rathaus.. They have also maintained the tradition of operating as hotels in summer (July through September) when the students are not there. The Atlas is just one of several hotels of this kind. Other ones, even cheaper, can be found through the website I am quoting below.
The Atlas has more facilities than most student's hotels: it has a bar, a restaurant and a garden café. The front desk offers some concierge services such as currency exchange and tickets for the theatres. All the rooms have private bathrooms. The location is great, close to the Parliament and with all the major sights at walking distance. There is also an underground station really close. | | | | Hotel Konig Von Ungarn: Not quite perfect | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I had high hopes of the Hotel Konig von Ungarn - it had come very highly recommended, both by personal friends and a Viennaophile here on VT. I have to say, it didn't quite live up to those expectations. The location is excellent, just around the corner from the Stephansdom and in very easy reach of so many of Vienna's sights - Mozart's Figarohaus is right above the restaurant - we watched the the first of the stream of tour buses that roll by each day as we ate breakfast! Once the tour buses have gone, the street is quiet enough though and we certainly slept well in our very comfortable beds. The room was a bit dreary however, old-fashioned was the word that came to mind. It was spacious enough, with plenty of cupboard space and a good sized bathroom. A little plate of handmade chocolates - always different - was a nice touch each day. Breakfast was fine - served with smiling efficiency, plenty of choice from the usual European mix of cold cuts, cheese, breads, cereals, etc and there was the offer of eggs cooked to order each day. Dinner was better - we came back very late one evening, the restaurant was empty but we were made very welcome and served a delicious meal despite the lateness of the hour. The standard of service from the front deskwas not so good. Negotiating the foyer in the morning was always tricky - there seemed to be some part of it roped off as the tiles were washed whenever we came downstairs. Finding someone to serve a cup of tea in the mirrored red and cream inner atrium was not always easy. The biggest blot on the copybook came when we were waiting in the atrium to be collected for a tour we'd booked at the front desk the previous day ... no-one came... and no-one came... and we knew the tour was leaving soon from right across town. OOPS! The tour had not been booked! The stops were pulled out, a taxi summoned and we made it but we were not too impressed - and we had to pay for the taxi and get the money back from the desk clerk, who wasn't on duty for the next two days!
So ... would I recommend the hotel? Not without reservations. The pluses and minuses are about equal, with the location being the very best point. | | | | Wombat's: The best hostel in Europe? | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I stayed at Wombat's hostel for three nights in August 2006. What a great place! Its best feature definitely is that it's spotless clean. (Voted Cleanest hostel in the world in 2003) I have seen so many hotels which were so dirty. The managers should stay at Wombat's some day. Or even better: How about an internship? ;) If the lobby wasn't that colourful, the people here weren't that young and the furniture wasn't so basic you would forget easily that you are in a hostel! Prices are very fair. We paid 24 EUR per person for a bed in an ensuite double room, half the price of the dirty hotel we had to move to for one night. Breakfast is available for 3.50 EUR, sheets and towel are included in the price. Staff was very friendly and international. There's a bar downstairs which is open from 6pm to 2 am. It's loud and cheap in there. A beer during happy hour costs 1 EUR, and a pizza is available for 3.90. There's a pool table and a table football available in the bar, too. The location 10 mts away from Westbahnhof is ok. I felt safe around there, the only not-so-nice-area is the Westbahnhof itself. At Mariahilfer Straße only a short walk from the hostel there's a bakery, shops, a supermarket and an excellent ice cream shop!
We stayed in two different double rooms. One was a handicapped room with a huge bathroom including tub and a double bed. The other one was a room under the roof with a nice view of Vienna by night, two single beds and a colourful bathroom. Both were clean. The only small problem was that the sheets of the double bed didn't really fit. But apart from that: Perfect! Wombat's have recently opened another hostel in the same area (directly on Äußere Mariahilfer Straße). It looks at least as great, a bit more stylish even.
