 | Vienna Reviews | Tips 471 - 480 of 536 | | My room had 2 beds, a sink, table + chairs and a cupboard. I was able to borrow a hair dryer from reception. Shower was through the communal kitchen. Toilet was a little further down the hall. There is a lift, but it doesn't stop on each floor. Breakfast was included and served in a lovely breakfast room. Pension is clean and secure. All staff are very friendly and can offer information on what to see and do.
Location, location, location. Could walk to all the major sites. U-Bahn train station is about a 10 minute walk away. 2 supermarkets are within a 5 minute walk. I had a very difficult time finding inexpensive accommodations in Vienna, but when I finally found Pension Wild it appeared to be a good place. It looks like the kind of pension that could be very run down if the owners let it get that way, but fortunately it is very well taken care of. Although the entry way doesn't look like much and doesn't make a very good first impression, our room was clean and nicely decorated considering the price we paid. It is also on a quiet side street, which is a very nice benefit. The best part was the outstanding breakfast buffet served in a very nice dining room downstairs, with more food than you could possibly need to get your day started. The hotel manager, Peter Wild, even personally worked in the dining room on our first morning and served tea and coffee to guests. The only thing I didn't like about the hotel was that our room had an overpowering strong smell of stale cigarette smoke, but we managed to air it out fairly well by leaving the windows open during the day. It's hard to know whether that was just our room or of other rooms were similarly afflicted.
One warning: On the web site Pension Wild is advertised as being "gay friendly," and at the hotel itself they actually have a gay-only spa somewhere. There are ads in a little kiosk for it and also for "gay Vienna." We weren't exactly sure what kind of place we had checked into when we saw all this, but at breakfast the next morning it was the same kind of clientele you would expect in any hotel (men and women of all ages, singles, married couples, children, etc.). Don' t let the emphasis on gay life scare you away one bit. I never once felt uncomfortable there. It is definitely NOT a gay-only hotel. Then again, if you are looking for a gay-friendly place, Pension Wild certainly appears to qualify. The staff at Hotel Praterstern is very friendly and efficient. When there was a problem with the lights in our room, it was quickly fixed. The hotel is across the street from a bar, so if your room faces the street, you may get a first-hand view of life in the city!
What makes this hotel attractive is its great location, a short walk from both the Nestroyplatz and Praterstern U-Bahn stations. It is less expensive than average because it is not located in the touristy First District of Vienna; interestingly, it is closer to the Danube, the Hundertwasser buildings and, of course, the Prater itself (with the well-known Riesenrad ferris wheel). Sometimes it's just the little things that sets a hotel apart, sometimes you might find something irritating and sometimes you find something that makes you want to recommend the hotel to everyone. The Prinz Eugen might not be the poshest hotel in Vienna and some might find the location a bit out of the way but there were two things that I just loved about this hotel, one was the fresh pineapple served for breakfast, it was the sweetest pineapple I've ever had and when I emptied the first dish of it, another dish appeared, no skimping on breakfast here. The other was the super friendly desk clerk who was there every time we walked by offering a greeting or helping us with our question of the moment. Another bonus was free internet in the lobby, yes you read that right, free internet not wifi. With so many hotels out to nickel and dime you to death, that was very nice (well until we read that our assistant had been out sick all week, but that's another story). Booked the hotel through www.booking.com for 117E per night, not cheap, but not overly priced for hotels in that category.
I selected this hotel based on the location, we were arriving and departing from Sudbahnhof, the south train station, and we were going into Bratislava on a daytrip and the trains for that city also left from the Sudbahnhof. There were two metro stations close by so we had no trouble getting into the center, even walked it a couple of times. Most ridiculous hotel I've ever been to - I couldn't believe my eyes! The decor and furniture (advertised as antique) was a collection of old used crappy armchairs, beds and shelves from 50-ties and 60-ties - something you would never consider sleeping in. Most likely it has been collected from a skip. One of the armchairs has springs coming out of it from underneath, carpets were disgusting to say the least and the sink was coming off the wall. There was only one bedside lamp - old desk lamp and even the door to the room was recycled. The wallpaper was yellow on the edges and peeling off. The only saving grace was nice breakfast and a location. The best thing about the Quisisana is it's location. It's on a quiet street and a 5 minute walk from the Museum Quarter and the inner ring. It's about 3 minute walk from the subway station - which is two stops away from the Westbanhoff train station where the you can catch the airport bus. The staff are friendly and the rooms clean - however, they are a little rundown and somewhat small. But, since there's so much to see in Vienna, you probably won't be in the room much anyway! The breakfast was ok - cereal, breads, cheese. You might consider taking a cab to the Westbahnhoff rather than the subway - it's 5 Euro. A cab to the airport is 30 Euro and there's a cabstand around the corner from the hotel. Considering the location, this is a very good value for the $$. Leave a Comment |

Vienna was my last stop in Austria, and as I started from Salzburg and worked my way across the country to Vienna, the standards of the rooms also gradually declined. Rooms and beds I slept in for Salzburg, Hallstatt etc were fantastic and I expected nothing else when I booked into the Quisisana in Vienna. The location is great. Across the street from the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, etc. And the breakfast was also pretty decent. I also liked the retro deco of the little cafe downstairs. The price is reasonable too. However, the room left much to be desired. The room was long and narrow, I keep having the feeling that my room used to be a portion of a bigger room that was renovated to accomodate more people and to earn more dough. The sink is at a built-in corner of the room. I had to endure nights on a bed with a mattress that had seen better days. The mattress was thin, and the springs of the bed were so worn out, that the bed sink in the middle. And yes, I could feel the coils sticking into my back every night. Imagine sleeping like that for 4 whole nights. The bathroom was an uncomfortable experience. You have a little stool to put your clothes. But the shower itself has no curtains nor door, and the bathroom being so small that as you shower, the water goes everywhere including getting your dry clothes, and the floor as well, extremely wet. Sigh....not good. We stayed four nights at the Radisson SAS Palais Hotel. It is nicely situated on a main street across the Stadtpark and close by a metro station. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful. However, the hotel room was quite small especially the bathroom. We could not open the draperies as it had a bad view of another building. Breakfast was very expensive at the hotel but there are lots of eating places nearby for any kind of meal. I would check into other 4 star hotel perhaps that will be more roomy. We don't like to feel cramped after a long day of walking and touring the different attractions. Leave a Comment |
It was my first experience of staying at this boutique hotel, it had a very definite Italian theme to it. The furnishings where expensive, the staff were very professional and customer focussed. I had requested an early check-in and on arrival they knew who we were. In addition they had upgraded us to a suite. So a bonus all round. We had breakfast in the bar and it was wonderful and it was a mix of Austrian, Italian and fried food. It was charged at 32€ for the two of us, so I am nor sure if that is good or bad? The suite was excellent, right at the top of the hotel and it was quite and peaceful; although we found the heating was set at 24C and only gave out cold air! Close to the city centre and well, a good place to stay even if it was a little expensive.
The restaurant Sapori, is apparently an contemporary Italian gourmet restauarnt - we did not eat there but the menu looked good. The H12 bar is again Italian themed, and has a good atmosphere and operate live music frequently in conjucntion with Sound Society. The hotel offers a gym and sauna. Well worth a visit. I've stayed in this hotel a few times and am always very satisfied. It is a great location, right across from the stadt park, and walking distance to Belvedere, Stephansdom and Staatsopern. The rooms are very nice and the hotel bar is good. The rates vary based on conferences, so some weekends it is ridiculous and some are great deals. Leave a Comment |
