If you visit the Emperor's apartments in the Hofburg and in Schoenbrunn and wish you could have such lodgings, the Imperial is the nearest thing money can buy. The impressive stairs, the bright chandeliers made with Swarovski crystal (even the ones in bathroom!) will make you feel like royals.
The Imperial is real luxury in every detail, not only in its furniture, for instance rooms have stereo CD players (Bang & Olufsen) the toiletries in the bathrooms are Bulgari's, and most important of all, the service is superb. A historical bit: after WWII, when Vienna was divided, the Imperial was in the area controlled by Russians, and the Russian headquarter was in this hotel (if you want to know, the Americans were at the Bristol and the British at the Sacher). | | | | Radisson Sas Palais Hotel: A palatial accommodation, but not too expensive Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Two elegant palaces of the 19th Century have been combined to create this hotel. The entrance, the halls, the charming breakfast room in a glass-roofed courtyard, all contribute to form an impression of aristocratic life-style. Here you will find the service and all the comforts of a 5-star hotel, but the bill is more reasonable than in other 5-star hotels in Vienna, especially if you can take advantage of one of the various discount formulas available with the Radisson Sas chain.
The location is great, in one of the elegant avenues of the Ring that encircles the oldest part of Vienna. From the windows of the front side you can see the monument to Johann Strauss, and a short walk along the Weihburggasse will take you to the Cathedral and the Graben. | | | | A walk in the woods | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Thus inspired, I, too, put on my hiking shoes (actually my only shoes but, hey, they worked) and headed through the pathways indicated by gaps in the trees. What a place. Great food, good rooms, fantastic park outside the door.
I should explain here that there is a difference in prices quoted. The reason for that is that I got in at a special rate. When I returned to Wien three weeks later the price had escalated to 115 euros per person. I then tried to get into a cheaper backpackers on the same grounds (the old servants quarters I believe) which are around 40 euros a night but I was disappointed as they were booked out. History part III - 1887 - The duke died and Wilhelmine offered the property to her relatives and only retained the lands. Her charity won her the title of "Angel or Wilhelminenberg". When she died in 1895 Erzhezog Rainer von Habsburg-Lothringen took over. Between 1903 and 1908 he built a new palais in the neo-empiricist style. 1918 - Used as a sick bay for war victims. June 27th 1918 to 1934 - Owned by the City Council who used it as a children's home. 1934 to 1938 - Home to the Vienna Boys Choir. 1945 - Partly in ruins, the building remains empty until 1988 when, completely overhauled, the new Gastehaus Schloss Wilhelminenberg opens. 2000 - Austria Trend Hotels take over and start further renovations to increase the quality standard to 4 stars in spring 2003.
