Best Central location to stay

by ania82

Hi guys,

I am planning a visit to Vienna for a long weekend and want to stay very central whithin walking distance for all the attractions, shops and retaurants etc. Can you please recommend an area?

I am a bit confused how the city works, if its 1st district does it mean its most central?

I was there earlier in the year and I stayed just off Mariahilfer Strasse. There are plenty of good mid range well priced hotels in the area (I stayed at the Austria Trend Anatol - no complaints).
The great thing about staying near Mariahilfer Strasse is you are 2-3 minutes from the centre on the U-bahn. It has a great selection of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants of all cuisines and to suit all price ranges.
If I went back to Vienna I'd stay in the same area.
Vienna has a very compact city centre but whatever area you choose to stay you will have to use transport to see all the sights. Better to stay near a U-bahn stop as this is the cheapest and fastest way to get around the city.

Travel Tips for Vienna

Balls are big in Vienna

by phil_uk_net

The Vienna social season revolves around various balls. I attended my first (and only) one on 28 February 2003 - the Flüchtlings Ball. This was held at the Vienna Rathaus, a huge building, and was quite informal. The thousands of people attending were dressed in everything from jeans to ball gowns.

Opernball, probably the most famous of the balls attended by Vienna's high society, had been held the previous day. There was lots on TV and in the papers about the presence of ex-Baywatch star Pamela Anderson. She had been invited as the guest of Dickie Lugner, an Austrian playboy who made his fortune through construction.

Fresh Lavenders

by imran8852

While at the Naschmarket, Mum bought whole lots and lots of lavender. I thought the change in weather has affected her state of mind (Sorry mum), But thanks to her after the trip, Our home has been smelling good for months. A good natural air freshener that will last for month, If you are from Asia like us, you can also give it away as souvenirs to family & friends. Once fully dried, the lavender can be drank as a herbal tea…so nothing goes to waste!

Upper Belvedere

by Skipka

Upper Belvedere is the other part of gallery where you can experience modern art collection set in the interiors of this beautiful palace. The entrance fee is the same as in the other part of Belvedere. In front of the palace and almost along the whole park there are statues of sphinxs.

SCHONBRUNN PALACE
The former summer residence of the emperor is one of the most visited buildings in Vienna. There are many things to see here, you can choose just one and buy individual ticket, but if you are visiting several, a sveral activities Pass is convenient. There are 2 different guided tours, the Red (Classic) Pass, 14 euros; and the Gold (More complete) Pass, 27 euros. Reserve at least a morning or an afternoon for the visit.

For those of us die-hard HARD ROCK CAFE fans thinking of collecting pins and what nots in Vienna, please look at the following picture....Oh no, what a disappointment...definitely a cultural difference. When in Vienna, Hard Rock Cafe is certainly not it!
