Traveling on trains

by asitava

Hi:
I am planning to travel from Vienna to Innsbruck to Salzburg to Vienna over the last week of November. Do I need to book in advance ? Also are 2nd class compartments comfortable ? Thanks.

1. Not unless you want to do so.

2. Yes, they are comfortable.

Reservations tend to be useful during heavy travel periods. Holidays, Friday afternoons as people head home / out of town for the weekend, etc. If you are planning to travel in those windows, reservations make sense, otherwise I don't bother with them.

Second class is fine. First class is nicer (and tends to be less crowded), but not worth the additional money, in my view.

we just did vienna salzburg and return two weeks ago - just bought the ticket and got on the train 15 minutes later. full, not overcrowded, run every hour. and second class is just fine. there is a travelling food cart every hour, so the only real difference is that the seats in first have a more attractive cover.

It's always a good idea to reserve in advance. Why risk it? And you get to choose the best seats before your trip. If you're traveling with someone and you go late you might not be able to sit together. I had no problems with the compartments when we went. Trains were very comfortable. Cheers and safe travels.

Disagree.

You are very, very unlikely to be unable to sit together, unless you choose a train at busy commuter times.

Pre-booking for trains is not the norm in Europe.

Amendment:

Pre-booking is not the norm unless a) you can get a good advance deal online or b) you are travelling on a reservation-only train (very few of those) or c) you want a sleeper or couchette.

None of these apply to the OP except, possibly the first one.....which is why it is worth checking the Austrian railway site.

there are a few trains at the weekend and early in the morning, when people go to work, when it makes sense to reserve a seat, BUT it is not necessary to reserve more than 1 day in advance.

Travel Tips for Vienna

Cafe Society

by Krumlovgirl

My favorite thing about Vienna has to be the small cafes. I love staying near St. Stephen's so that I can have complete access to the hordes of coffehouses that surround the area. It's a lot of fun to go inone and spend a couple of hours drinking coffee, munching on pastries and people watching. Late one night my mother and I went to the Mozart Cafe behind the Opera house. We weren't very hungry and really just wanted somewhere where we could sit and talk, but the food eventually called our names. It was winter at the time and as we sat inside th warm and snug cafe, a light snow began to fall. It was very nice being there alone with her, sharing a bottle of wine, and walking over a long dinner.

Vienna in Summer

by BorneoGrrl

Since I've grew up in a hot & humid climate, I can't really appreciate the same when I'm abroad. Vienna can get pretty hot & humid during its summers so forget about your coats & woolly clothes. There are a lot more visitors during this time and can get crowded, especially at the attractions. The trains and some stores also don't have airconditioning so it can get stifling in them.

Summer is a time to be spent outdoors e.g playing or sunbathing in the parks or Donauinsel. Sometimes, you can even spot people sunbathing in the nude. It's also time to eat fresh strawberries & other summer fruits sold in supermarkets or my favorite, the Naschmarkt. And not forgetting the sweet ice-cream sundaes from Zanoni & Zanoni.

The zoo (Schonbrunn)

by kris-t

The initial animal collection at Schounbrunn was formed by the stock of animals from the former palace of Neugeboude and the menagerie belonging to the Belvedere. These animals - with the exception of the "rapacious" beasts - were moved to the new menagerie at Schounbrunn. The number of exotic animals subsequently increased through new acquisitions and gifts. Both the zoological and botanical collections benefited from the expeditions to the West Indies financed by Franz Stephan.

The opening of the gardens to the general public in 1779 also included free admission to the menagerie During the course of the 19th century new animals were added to the collection, existing enclosures being adapted as well as new enclosures built. The attractions included elephants, camels, kangaroos and other exotic fauna.

Take time for a wonderful walk...

by joh28

Take time for a wonderful walk by feet or with horses through the lovely small ways beside the shopping malls.
The wonderful architecture is similar to the one in Paris and other towns with buildings from the 19th or beginning 20th century..... You'll love it! Impressions of old architecture

Dogs in Vienna

by WardrobeMK

The Viennese love their dogs! They are allowed to come into shops, shopping centres, the U-bahn and other transport, coffeeshops, restaurants, everywhere! Some people do not clean after their doggie doo though so while looking at the sights keep one eye on the pavement!
