Traveling on trains
by asitava
Hi:
I am planning to travel from Vienna to Innsbruck to Salzburg to Vienna over the last week of November. Do I need to book in advance ? Also are 2nd class compartments comfortable ? Thanks.

1. Not unless you want to do so.
2. Yes, they are comfortable.

Reservations tend to be useful during heavy travel periods. Holidays, Friday afternoons as people head home / out of town for the weekend, etc. If you are planning to travel in those windows, reservations make sense, otherwise I don't bother with them.
Second class is fine. First class is nicer (and tends to be less crowded), but not worth the additional money, in my view.

we just did vienna salzburg and return two weeks ago - just bought the ticket and got on the train 15 minutes later. full, not overcrowded, run every hour. and second class is just fine. there is a travelling food cart every hour, so the only real difference is that the seats in first have a more attractive cover.

It's always a good idea to reserve in advance. Why risk it? And you get to choose the best seats before your trip. If you're traveling with someone and you go late you might not be able to sit together. I had no problems with the compartments when we went. Trains were very comfortable. Cheers and safe travels.

Disagree.
You are very, very unlikely to be unable to sit together, unless you choose a train at busy commuter times.
Pre-booking for trains is not the norm in Europe.

Amendment:
Pre-booking is not the norm unless a) you can get a good advance deal online or b) you are travelling on a reservation-only train (very few of those) or c) you want a sleeper or couchette.
None of these apply to the OP except, possibly the first one.....which is why it is worth checking the Austrian railway site.

there are a few trains at the weekend and early in the morning, when people go to work, when it makes sense to reserve a seat, BUT it is not necessary to reserve more than 1 day in advance.
