Happy Birthday Franzl
by sabsi
On Friday, August 18th 2006 Kaiser Franz Joseph I., emperor of Austria from 1848 to 1916, celebrated his 176th birthday. Well he would have, anyway, if only he was still alive. He died in 1916 though so some people had to celebrate it for him...
We happened to be in Vienna at the same time so we baked a cake and went to his birthday party in Franziskanerkirche. As we were a little late we missed all the "Happy Birthdays", cakes and burning candles, but we still were early enough to visit him downstairs. Because after a rememberance mass the party continued in the basement of the church, where all major emperors of Austria are buried. We were shocked to see all the sad faces and funny costumes of the people who participated in this event. After all it was a birthday party, no need to cry (like the old ladies) or wear uniform (like the right-wing students)...? Another highlight was yet to come: A celebration in front of Franzl's monument. A scary old man had time to hold a very racist speech - with the police and a lot of normal looking people watching. In the end the "Deutschmeister", a marching band in traditional uniforms, played a few songs which even the tourists attracted. I was relieved really that most of them didn't understand German or what was going on. We didn't either: We couldn't believe our eyes and ears when the crowd started to sing along to the "Kaiser Hymne", the former hymn of Austria back in the days of the emperor (which has the same melody as the German hymn now).
During the whole event we didn't know whether to laugh or cry about the seriousness of these people, craving for a monarchy and living in a dream world. I don't worry too much about the old people. After all they probably knew the emperor personally ;-) What I do worry about is the amount of people in my age attending a celebration like this, most of them members of student fraternities.
And I? Well, I had a great laugh. And I am looking forward to the next reruns of the "Sissi" Films at christmas. Now that I know the emperor personally it will be a completely different experience...

Good local restaurants and weather
by ChioQuiroz
Hi
I'm traveling to Vienna next week and wanted to see if anyone knows about good restaurants, where I can find local food. I'm trying to avoid turistic expensive ones.
Also, if anyone knows about weather conditions there this time of the year? Too cold for shorts?
Tks!!

Try "centimeter". Long sausages, breads all come in sizes measured by centimeter. Very reasonable prices and friendly atmosphere. They also provide bags for the food you can't finish. Just check the name in google and find the address. You shouldn't miss this restaurant.

One of my favourite restaurants in Vienna is very centrally located, not very formal and reasonably priced. It is called Stadtbeisl and the address is 21 Naglergasse.
Naglergasse is a very narrow, pedestrian-only, street that starts at the north end of the Graben.
I have been there several times over a number of years and I often recommended it to friends. All of them liked it.
This restaurant doesn't have a website, but I have written a tip about it in my Vienna page.

Due to extreme climatic changes the World is experiencing at the moment, trying to predict the weather can be difficult because of local, on the day variations.
Most places now are seeing weather conditions well outside the norm.
The information below should be used as a guide only.

Travel Tips for Vienna
Leopoldsberg and Kahlenberg
by Zo72
There are two hills to the northwest of the city, Leopoldsberg and Kahlenberg. They are both reachable from Heiligenstadt by public bus 38A or by walking. Since these hills dominate Vienna there is great point of view there (but choose sunny day! ;) ). Sight is much better than any photo can show.
At Leopoldsberg there is a church with some interesting data and pictures about Turkish invasion in 1683. It is Leopoldsberg where Christian forces under Jan Sobieski started their victorious attack against Turks on 12th September, 1683.
It is also interesting to hike around this area. There are forests around and villas and vineyards in the direction of Vienna and sometimes there are Heurigen (wine taverns) within vineyards where you can try their wine. Viertel (quarter (of liter)) of wine sounds nice for any tired backpacker. ;) Size of Vienna is stunning when watched from these hills! City occupies such a wast area. It is also nice to walk around and that viertel weiss wein was cool. ;)
The Russians have landed
by iandsmith
In the last moments of my Vienna excursion I chanced upon this monument. "What could it be for" thought I.
My enquiry led to someone telling me it was in memory of the war dead from World War II, in particular, the Russians.
It certainly is a standout. As to its popularity, well, you'll have to ask some Austrians about that!

This is Am Hof - the biggest square in the inner city. The tall column is the Mariensaule, it was erected to commemorate salvation from the protestant forces during the 30 years war. The huge Baroque building to the right is the Kirche Am Hof.
coffee
by margaretvn
Coffee and coffee drinking is an institution in Vienna, so do not just ask for "a cup of coffee"
.....You have to know your coffee in Vienna!
for example:
a melange is a blend of coffee and hot milk
Schwarzer is a black coffee (large or small)
Schlagobers is a strong black coffee werved with plain or whipped cream.
