Few questions to locals or experienced travellers

by manofaran

Hi all^

Now I'm heading to Wien. This was another dream and it's quite real to become true.

I've got a Thomas Cook guide through Wien, but can not find info on other cities and small towns.
As I am interested to see more in Austria I would like to ask you:

1. What three closest to Wien cities/towns that can be reached by bus or train you suggest to visit? Beautifull but probably not often visited by tourists.
2. Is it possible for a single traveller without car to reach Hallstatt (train, bus)?
3. Where would you bring your best friend who is first time in Wien to make him feel the "spirit of the city" in the beginning of March?
4. Are there any restrictions in Wien for making photos in the streets (tripod restrictions f.e.)?
5. What is the best photoprocessing (film only) in Wien?
6. What places for landscaping on Danube not far from Wien?
7. Analog photogear0camera shops in Wien (I know abt leicashop.com but nothing more)

Thanks in advance to all who'll take part!
Best regards!

Hi, get a Lonely planet for Austria, and you will find out about the liitle villages and towns around Vienna which are @off the Beaten Track@ so to say! There is morew than enough posibilty for photography from Schonbrunn gardens, along the Danube, grinzing etc. etc. too much too mention!

You can alo google for transport and bus time tables from Wien to Hallstadt!

Have a great time

Travel Tips for Vienna

it's all about shopping

by miromi

it's all about upmarket shopping here. the shopping districts manage to make materialism look elegant and refined, but it's basically a big mall with very fancy prices, but the fountains and sculptures are gorgeous. please avoid the H&M right before christmastime, as i will not be liable for you being stomped to death.

Forget the guidebooks

by Manara

A thing every visitor should do in Vienna, at least for a half day (a full day would be even better) is to put aside maps and guidebooks and wander about the streets of the old city centre (the area enclosed within the avenues of the Ring and the Donaukanal).
In this smallish area there is such a number of beautiful buildings and statues, churches, picturesque corners, elegant shops and nice cafes that you are not allowed to use the word "serendipity" when you describe your "discoveries".

Joe Also Took Me...

by coceng

When I was staying with Joe, he also took me to Schloss Schonbrunn !
The photo was taken by Joe in the garden in the Palace !
this is a beautiful garden set in French styles.
It is a must visit if you are in Vienna !

14th district - Penzing

by pakistanibrain

The Schloss Penzing is an old, but rather small castle in Western Vienna. It is not in a very good condition, but still good enough to make a tour through it.

Penzing (that's how the 14th district is called) is also a quite noble district in the West of Vienna like the 13th. It is mainly a residential area with a few shops inbetween. The other main attractions are the Auhof Centre (a new shopping center) and the Hanappi Stadium (home ground of Rapid Vienna).

Round up

by ErinInMD

Something that I was not used to was they way Austrians tip. I'm used to tipping 20% and was a little shocked when my friend explained how tipping works in Vienna.

Basically you just round up the amount of the bill. For example, if your bill was 4.20 Euros you would round up to 5.00 Euros. Do not leave money sitting on the table as you leave, because it is considered rude to not give it directly to the server.

If you say danke that means the server is to keep the change, so be careful if you're handing over a lot of money for a small bill. You'll want to tell the waiter how much to give you back.
