Hofburg
by call_me_rhia
The Hofburg is a city within a city: it's where the royal palace used to be and - basically - it's the royal quarter. Here you can see, one next to the other, several sights of interest. The best knows is the winter palace of the royal familt, but the Hoburg is much more than this. The Hofburg is also several museums, a chapel, a church, the national Library and the place where the Spanish horse-riding school is located. What I liked about it most is the architecture: there are some really fine examples of several styles - which are among the best one can see. Six hundred years of monarchy have obviously left an evidence trace, here.
Vienna Tip

I enjoyed my evening at the State Opera (die Staatsoper) very much although my German is not good enough to understand all of the program which was Peter Pan. The Opera House by itself is an architectural masterpiece and regular tours run on most days.
Tourist Information and Tickets
by Jmill42
I used this Tourist Information center about 3 times, and each time the people were friendly and got me the information I needed. I also purchased my tickets to the Vienna Boys' Choir here, and they sell all kinds of tickets. It, obviously, has all the normal maps and information about current events, and is located right on the corner near the Staatsoper. Its hours were 9-19:00, but beware that the area was under construction when I was there, including the building this was located in, so you might have to look for it, as I did the first time. Address: 38 Karntnerstrasse

The lighthouse
by iandsmith
I alighted from the train at Donaiunsel and found my way outside the enclosed area of the Reichsbrucke Neu and realised there was nothing on the island but a park. There were very few people using this facility, no doubt due to the slightly chilly weather. Thus it was that I had most of the place to myself. I wandered down the side of the bridge and underneath to see what was on the other side. I was amazed. There, in the middle of Wien was a lighthouse. I pondered on that for a while and decided it made perfect sense when you think about it. It's just that I am used to them on clifftops overlooking the ocean and this seemed so out of place. As well as that I had never seen it photographed in anyone else's pages. "This lighthouse was originally located on Bodensee as scenery for an open air theatre. It was sold and brought there to vienna just for being another eyecatcher of so called "Sunken City", which part of the entertainment area on the island you visited."
For this enlightenment I am indebted to VTer mh1030.
Austria is a country rich with...
by seamandrew
Austria is a country rich with culture. From music, to technology, to dance clubs, to good food. All the major cities are full of things to do. If you wish to experience Austria's culture at its finest, look to spend a few days in Vienna and a few days in Salzburg at the least. These two cities, while in the same country, are worlds apart. They even speak a different dialect of German in each city.
