 | Vienna Hotel Konig Von Ungarn Reviews | Tips 1 - 4 of 4 | | The KVU claims to be Vienna's oldest hotel...but worry not, that's 'old' as in ancient and dignified rather than crumbly and careworn! The building is some 300 years old and its enjoyed life as an hostelry since 1815. With only 33 rooms and no sign of a swimming pool, health club or whizzo internet suite, it is - as they say - small but perfectly formed. At a price considerably less than the more opulent Imperial or Sacher, the KVU provides a more personal feel for those who appreciate it. For example, when I was unable to identify a piece of music I heard playing on my radio at 11.40pm, the front desk duly tuned in, identified the station and telephoned them for the details of the artist and track they's been playing...and, by jove, I now have the Herbert Gronemeyer CD to prove it! The restaurant has an excellent reputation and the bar in the atrium serves coffees, snacks and non-alcoholic cocktails along with more alcoholic attractions. Buffet breakfasts are splendid...and you know, you really should 'go continental' with delicious meats, breads cheeses and gugelhupf (a suitable cake for brekky!) rather than going for the old bacon/ham and eggs! We had a different splendid family apartment for each of our two trips to the KVU. Super bathroom, lovely bedrooms - though it was one of our children who got the canopied single bed! I was almost tempted to give up the missus and the double! Handmade choclates magically appeared in our room each evening too. One thing you can't beat is the hotel's location. A stone's throw from St Stephen's cathedral, two minutes stroll (literally) from a major underground station, adjacent to Vienna's swishest shopping streets and yet it still boasts a pretty quiet location. I wouldn't have gone back if it wasn't a lovely place to stay! Worth treating yourself and it's not featured in brochures yet!
Traditional style and elegance - small but delightful - almost impossible to get lost,(just scour the skyline for the cathedral spire and head towards it! ) - unbeatable location! I had high hopes of the Hotel Konig von Ungarn - it had come very highly recommended, both by personal friends and a Viennaophile here on VT. I have to say, it didn't quite live up to those expectations. The location is excellent, just around the corner from the Stephansdom and in very easy reach of so many of Vienna's sights - Mozart's Figarohaus is right above the restaurant - we watched the the first of the stream of tour buses that roll by each day as we ate breakfast! Once the tour buses have gone, the street is quiet enough though and we certainly slept well in our very comfortable beds. The room was a bit dreary however, old-fashioned was the word that came to mind. It was spacious enough, with plenty of cupboard space and a good sized bathroom. A little plate of handmade chocolates - always different - was a nice touch each day. Breakfast was fine - served with smiling efficiency, plenty of choice from the usual European mix of cold cuts, cheese, breads, cereals, etc and there was the offer of eggs cooked to order each day. Dinner was better - we came back very late one evening, the restaurant was empty but we were made very welcome and served a delicious meal despite the lateness of the hour. The standard of service from the front deskwas not so good. Negotiating the foyer in the morning was always tricky - there seemed to be some part of it roped off as the tiles were washed whenever we came downstairs. Finding someone to serve a cup of tea in the mirrored red and cream inner atrium was not always easy. The biggest blot on the copybook came when we were waiting in the atrium to be collected for a tour we'd booked at the front desk the previous day ... no-one came... and no-one came... and we knew the tour was leaving soon from right across town. OOPS! The tour had not been booked! The stops were pulled out, a taxi summoned and we made it but we were not too impressed - and we had to pay for the taxi and get the money back from the desk clerk, who wasn't on duty for the next two days!
So ... would I recommend the hotel? Not without reservations. The pluses and minuses are about equal, with the location being the very best point. Leave a Comment Theme: HotelPrice: US$120-180 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageDirections: Very close to the Stefasndom |

At the Hotel Konig Von Ungarn we were treated like princesses.... If you can stay in one of the two suites do it. The entire stay was a true pleasure.
This is smaller hotel so everyone knows who you are, and you end up feeling at home. Pros: Good location in city center; recently updated marble bathroom with 2 sinks Cons: Room location is important--if you get a room on the street side it can be noisy as the horsedrawn tourist carriages enter the city on this route early every morning; courtyard was very quiet; one member of the front desk staff was consistently rude Not sure: Period furniture may not appeal to everyone (see pic) Leave a Comment |
