Re: Christmas in Vienna

by travelthrough

Hello!

Christmas in Vienna can be nice, but don't expect too much. 4 or 5 years ago it stopped snowing, so the chances you will have a "white Christmas", like maybe in New York, are pretty rare.

Christmas markets and fairs are open at night, however only until 11pm or midnight, latest. The most famous is the one at Town Hall (Rathaus) with an ice-skating rink going through the park and a more or less traditional Christmas Market where you can drink "Gluehwein" (heated wine).

In general, Vienna is not the city for nightlife. However, restaurants and cafes in the city center will be open on Holy Eve, also on Christmas Day.

I think there should be classical masses in the cathedrals like St. Stephen's, I think that should be nice. Furthermore, you should check concerts like "Christmas in Vienna", they might be more expensive though and you should book soon enough already!

All the best!

Travel Tips for Vienna

A little about the Hapsburgs

by blaird

Vienna became the center point of the Hapsburg empire, as shown by the Congress of Vienna in 1814. This congress kind of remade the boundaries in Europe after Napolean fell from power. It was designed to create a balance in power throughout the region.

Vienna prospered even more under long reign of Maria Theresa during the late 18th century. You will see a large monument to her near the art museums.

She guided Vienna through the Enlightenment and welcomed Mozart to her courtwhen he was 6. Laying back on the grass near the Maria Terese monument drawing my view of the monument...so relaxing.

Breakfast near Südbahnhof and Westbahnhof

by verliebtinwien

Even if you arrive at or are travelling from the not so pretty train stations Westbahnhof and Südbahnhof, there are many options for having a great breakfast at Vienna's famous coffee houses, either a short walk or tramride/underground ride a way. At Westbahnhof, the nearest coffee place is right across the street, Cafe Westend. Take the main exit and you will see a buiding where it says Hotel Fürstenhof. Cafe Westend is on the corner. Another option is to take tram no. 5 to Albertgasse and have your breakfast at Cafe Hummel, or take underground line U3 direction Simmering to Volkstheater and go to Cafe Raimund. Or, take the same underground a few stations further, to Stubentor, and go to Cafe Prückel.
From Südbahnhof you can walk down Argentinierstrasse to Cafe Goldegg or take tram D to Schwarzenbergplatz and go to Cafe Schwarzenberg, alternatively take the same tram to Burgtheater/Rathaus and go to Cafe Landtmann. All these cafes are very centrally located and offer a unique experience! The coffee houses!

Open shows and sezonal stalls

by Zo72

One of the things that make this city special is what is going on in the streets and parks. There are open concerts taking place, some shows, many street musicians, as well as stalls where they sell seasonal things, like roasted potatoes, chestnuts, young wine (sturm) and punch that keeps you warm during cold winter days! ;) ). My favorite concert was concert of ethno music in Augarten. Also it was interesting for me to see how many people find punch stalls as great meeting point even during coldest winter evenings.

Vienna Tip

by Krystynn

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to live like a true Royal? Yeah, me too.

Well, why don't you join a guided tour through the beautiful Hofburg Palace, the Imperial residence of Empress Elizabeth and Emperor Franz Joseph? Better to go on a guided tour and get all the inside scoop on past and current palace intrigues and gossips than to wander around aimlessly here. Whatever your decision, it'll surely leave you spellbound for sure!

Today, this palace is a treasure trove of museums, apartments... and it also includes a portion of the Spanish Riding School. Enjoy your visit!

And to drive my point home, here's a lovely pic of the Main Entrance to the Hofburg Palace as seen from Michaelsplatz.

Christmas Markets Are Social Occasions

by BillNJ

In Vienna (like many other places in Europe), there is a tradition of Christmas markets in the holiday season. These markets are not just for shopping -- but are social events. People enjoy good conversation along with traditional Christmas snacks (such as Heisse Maroni) and drinks (such as Punsch).
