Mariahilf Church, Mariahilfestrasse
by yooperprof
The Mariahilf Kirche is an oasis of calm on bustling Mariahilfestrasse - the Oxford Street of Vienna. It was designed in the early 1700s by one of the Habsburg's favorite architects, Johan Lukas von Hildebrandt, who put his lasting stamp on so much of the city. The courtyard in front of the church is dominated by this statue of Haydn, who briefly served as organist for the church.

Take the subway to see Schonbrun. Its quite a bit away from the city center, so you have to take the U-bahn, and spend almost the whole day. Still it is worth doing. I was there after the flowers had blossomed. I could only imagine how the garden would look with them blossoming.
Am Hof
by yooperprof
Am Hof - literally, "in the courtyard" - is the largest of the series of pleasantly arranged squares and plazas in the 1st District, the city center of Vienna. In the center is a tall memorial known as the "Mariensäule" (Marian Column), honoring the Virgin Mary for what was believed to be her intervention in protecting Catholic Vienna from the savagely marauding Swedes during the Thirty Years War. The black angels at the column's base are garbed in full battle array. They are fighting off a dragon, a lion, a serpent and a basilisk, representing hunger, war, heresy and the Plague. In the background of my photo are the ornaments which stand atop the facade of the highly decorated Central Fire Station, also in Am Hof.
Taking a pee

Not a local custom, I know, but I thought that this deserved its own category.
In the U bahn (underground) outside the Opera House, going down the escalators we immediately saw this and laughed.
Only in Vienna!
