"Gateway to Croatia"
We used Vienna as our gateway to a month long trip in Croatia. We spent 2 nights here upon arrival and one upon departure.
"Transportation"
The Cat (airport to City rail line) was incredibly fast, clean and easy to use. It cost 18 Euro each and was easy to buy tickets at Kiosks located all over the subway stations and airport. They Kiosk let you see the info in English, German or whatever language you request.
The subway was also fast with almost continuous transport. A subway map is a MUST to figure out which direction you want to travel as they dont always list the next stop the train is going to. Sometimes it lists the END destination so you need to know which direction that is.
The above ground trains are also cheap, coninuous and easy to use. They go all over town.
"Hotel Pension Franz"
We loved this place. The location was terrific. It was right on a train line and one block from the subway. It has a great Irish pub right across the street and the staff was very friendly and helpful. It cost 95 euro a night but includes a very generous breakfast that is open from 7am till 10 am. The rooms are unique but clean. It is a very old building and has a lot of character. Its not the Hilton, but that why we travel. We dont want the sterile, cloned environment of American hotels.

The hotel is in a safe location on Wahringer Strasse. Across from the Votivkirche (church), Schotentor, University, Hotel Regina (4 star) and a two min. walk to the Ring Strasse. The street and sidewalks are well traveled by students, tourists and locals. Have never stayed at Hotel Franz but the area is clean and safe. It is also only about a 15 min. walk to St. Stephan's Cathederal
Have a great visit

Greetings From The USA,
Is anyone familiar with:
Hotel Pension Franz
Währinger Str. 12
1090 Vienna, Austria
http://members.aon.at/hotelpensionfranz/index_e.htm
We have been offered a good deal for a
4 - 5 night stay at the Hotel, and it seems
to be a nice place.
Is anyone familiar with the area, and or the
Hotel Pension Franz ???
Is it a good area ??
They say the following:
Located in the city center ....
Pleasant, welcoming 3-star hotel, equipped with
modern comfort, centrally located in front of the Votiv Church, at the "Ringstraße" next to Schottentor
Square and the old University of Vienna. Underground/tramway are close nearby.
Comfortable and spacious rooms overlooking the
Votiv Park.
Any help would be greatly appreciated ... :o)
We would like to make contact with a local VT'er
who would be able to help us out with questions
my wife and I may have.
Our trip this year will find us in:
London - Prague - Budapest
Bratslavia - Vienna - Netherlands
Thank you for your time,
Mary and Al

Hi !
There are really not a lot of "bad" areas in Vienna, maybe except the "Guertel", where you have a lot of noise, smog and red lights.
The area around Waehringerstr. is nice and centrally located - Sigmund Freud's living quaters in Berggasse will be just around the corner, university and Votivkirche etc.
good luck !

That hotel is a member of an association of Austrian hoteliers that guarantees good service.
The area is good. You can walk from there to some of the major sites, and there is a station nearby where several bus and tram lines stop.

Hi, Al and Mary:
I am Viennese and grew up in Währingerstraße. It´s a good area, the center of Vienna is easily reached. There are many trams nearby. Währingerstraße itself is a major street, but I think it´s a good area to stay.
Right now, I´m living not far away from Währingerstraße, so if you are interested, we could meet.
Many greetings

accomodation in or around 19th district of Vienna Austria

my husband and i are looking for reasonably priced accomodation within walking or tram ride to grinzing/19th district of vienna for a few days mid january...any suggestions

I do not know of any hotels in Grinzing. I know there are a few in Oberdobling and Untersievering, still in the 19th district, but not exactly at walking distance from Grinzing. Moreover, I don't know much about those hotels, apart from names and addresses.
The best suggestion I can give is to recommend a hotel that is more central in the city, but is close to a stop of the line 38, the tram that goes to Grinzing.
It is the Hotel-Pension Franz, in Wahringer Strasse.
It is nice and unexpensive. For details you can check this website: www.hotels-austria.com/Vienna-center/franz.htm
