Mali Grinzig-Little Grinzig

by taylorite

Years ago we travelled from Vienna to Bratislava and we happened to find a wine place that was a Slovak speaking area. We enjoyed it and wonder ifi is still thee.
We also visited the Roman Ruin that is close by. We stayed in a hotel in the area and the owner told us about this mali grinzig-little grinzig.
Any info would be most helpful.
Thank You.

Grinzing is north-west of Vienna, but this one is obviously close to Hainburg - Carnunthum - Petronell (Where roman tuins were found) or Goettlesbrunn
VT-member MEdelmann might help you about it, he is a vinter in that area (Goettlesbrunn), but mostly not online on VT anymore :

They also rent rooms and have excellent wines
Goettlesbrunn is very close to the highway Vienna-Bratislava

Modern and old town well mixed together

by Raimix

From panorama view (the best, I think, from Prater wheel and Cathedral) it is easy predictable where the old and a new part of city is. Many old buildings are well preserved and the modern buildings fit to the common view of city.

The Ringstrasse is the main "border" what joins old and new parts. Around this street you can see lots of great buildings.

Be in time at the Clock museum

by Pavlik_NL

Funny little museum in the old city centre, proclaiming to have the largest collection of clocks and watches of all kind in the world. Especially great is that every full hour, all clocks will make their sounds at the same moment. More info, see the website Uhrenmuseum (Clocks): www.wienmuseum.at/start/Uhrenmuseum.htm

The Holocaust Memorial in Judenplatz

by yooperprof

Contemporary British scultpor Rachel Whiteread designed the Holocaust Memorial. It's in the form of a bleak concrete library, sealed-up and silent. The Memorial consciously conflicts with the buildings around it; it makes no concessions. Around the base of the Memorial are inscribed the names of major concentration and extermination camps of the Third Reich, with the number s of victims at each camp. (A greater percentage of Austrians joined the Nazi Party than Germans; a disproportionate number of the camps were headed by Austrian members of the S.S.) Before World War II, Jews represented almost 10% of Vienna' s population, or 170,000; by the summer of 1945 fewer than 400 were left.

Take your shoes off!

by morgenhund

Most Viennese take their shoes off and wear slippers around the house - and will always thrust a pair of slippers into your hands upon entering their homes. This is because a lot have parquet flooring and in winter there is a lot of grit used on the pavements to prevent people from slipping over. Similarly if there is a lot of snow then wearing shoes indoors also creates a lot of dirt, which of course means cleaning up.
