Vienna in December
by v_florina
Hi,
I am travelling to Vienna between Xmas and Nyew Year's Eve, and would like to get some tips for those days:
- is Prater open? On the official website it says the official season ends on 31 Oct
- can you name some pubs/ locations where we can eat 'ordinary' meals? we're not looking for anything fancy but would like to avoid fast-foods. We'll be staying near Prater
- train from Vienna to Bratislava - should be booked in advance?
Thank you guys!

in Prater there are a very few carousels etc. open, there is also a "wintermarket" next to the Giant wheel and that is running as well

For lunch in the city Centre you can't beat Bierhof off Naglergasse. This is a great little pub near Hofburg which has an outdoor and indoor facility. The food is excellent, very friendly service. Lovely for an economical quick lunch. See my tip on my Vienna page.
Travel Tips for Vienna
A walk in Schoenbrunn
by Skipka
The best time for visit is in the summer or autumn when there are colourful landscapes around but however in any time it is monumental place. Schoenbrunn used to be a residence of Empress and Emperor (no wonder) and there is beautiful palace (on the list of The UNESCO World Heritage). Nowadays you will find there everything you should like such as history site, gallery (Orangery), maye for chidlren and for those who are children in their souls, ZOO, cafes, theatres, wonderful parks and museums. Simply, take the one day trip just for Schoenbrunn only. And time to time just sit on the bench and observe life around ... that is true Vienna ...

Go to the The Spanish Riding School of Vienna...
...is the oldest and last Riding School in the world where classic dressage is still practised in its purest form. This Institute was founded in 1572 and its very name gives away the fact that the horses were of Spanish origin.
The Imperial Court Stud was situated near the village of Lipizza and it was this village which gave the race its name.
After the collapse of the Danube Monarchy in 1920 the Austrian Republic became the legal successor and from this time the Lipizzaners have been bred at the federal Stud at Piber in Styria.
The Lipizzaner is regarded as the oldest classic horse race in Europe.
Water distributors arond the city
by ealgisi
Something i found really good in Wien, are the free water distributors around the touristic places.
This is really a good idea, specially for such hot days like when i was there.
People sometimes want a bit o water not the whole bottle and in those distributors you can choose how much water you want, so just grab as much as you want and continue the visit to the city, always refreshed.

coffee!
by margaretvn
The Viennese coffee house is a wonderful place to rest after serious sightseeing. The coffee is not cheap but after you have ordered you can sit as long as you like and people watch or there are often newspapers available. The coffee is always served with a glass of water.
It is said that the first coffee houses opened in 1683 after the defeat of the Turks. The coffee house as we see it date from the late 18th century.
