Vienna on a Budget

This hostel is one of the best I have ever stayed in. The facilities, furnishings and comfort are among the best I have ever seen in a hostel. THe rooms are spacious with ensuite bathroom and shower room. The rooms have T.V. and wireless internet. The rooms are even serviced every day!
A buffet breakfast is also included in the price and there is a seperate kitchen and lounge for backpackers as well as a lounge and bar upstairs. The hostel also has good security with keycards needed to enter the hostel itself and again to access the every floor and every room.
I really can't fault this hostel except that the staff is not the best. the welcome and help thye offer is good but the hostel in general seems to be understaffed and they can't handle the huge volumes of guests staying at the hostel and I wasn't even there during the summer season. The only other criticism I have is that there are no lockers in the dorms and the lockers downstairs are very small.

Overall a great hostel and one I would recommend and one which I would use again on a visit to Vienna

Unique Quality: Buffet Breakfast included
Keycard security
Free wireless
Bar and lounge
Games room
Backpackers lounge and kitchen
Daily dorm housekeeping

MEININGER CITY HOSTEL & HOTEL VIENNA

The hostel is situated in a quite residential area, close to the metro, from where you get to downtown for less than 5 min. Also the hostel is close to the South Train Station. It's a pretty new hostel. When we stayed there in September the kitchen and the bar weren't set up yet.

Unique Quality: The rooms are big, bright, very clean, with TV,lockers, telephone, bathroom and WC. Linens and blankets(comforters) are free. Even towels are provided.

The breakfast was huge (all-you-can-eat)-the best breakfast i've seen. The staff is very friendly and helpfull. When we're leaving , the hostel paid for our cab (it costs otherwise 35 Euros), and the guy from the reception helped us with the luggage. This has never happened before :)

There is also internet terminal, but it wasn't free. To use it you have to buy a card from the reception. By the time you log in and your page loads the card was over. That was the only thing i did not like in the hotel. Otherwise, i would stay there again and i would recommend it to everyone.

Also, because we booked online we got discount from the price:)

Meininger City Hostel

by catweazle

Hi there,

I'll be in Vienna for a week in december and will stay at the Meininger City Hostel.
Has anybody been there already and can tell me what it's like?
It's located in the 10th district (called "Favoriten") near Suedbahnhof. What sort of neighbourhood is this?

Thanks, catwaezle

Hi,

I don't know anything about that hostel, but I did stay in the Favoriten district when I visited Vienna last year.

As you say, it is very close to Sudbahnhof, which is convenient if you want to take daytrips to Bratislava or to various Hungarian towns such as Sopron.

I stayed on Laxenburgerstrasse (a road that runs parallel to Favoritenstrasse) and which is about 20-25 minutes walking distance from "The Ring" and the main sights of Vienna's historic centre. Public transport will get you to Ringstrasse in under 5 minutes, but I enjoyed the walk.

Favoritenstrasse is a bustling pedestrian precinct by day, with lots of shops and cafes. There is a reasonable choice of restaurants, and a few pubs and bars, but it's pretty quiet at night. There is a shopping mall called the Columbus Centre, on Columbusplatz, just off Favoritenstrasse.

A fair few of the restaurants and cafes on my Vienna page are on Favoritenstrasse.

Hope this helps a little!

Enjoy your trip,

Jonathan

Can`t give you any input on the Meininger City Hostel, as I don`t know it. Favoriten doesnt enjoy a that good reputation in Vienna, it is considered as one of the less safe areas, and you won`t find too many nice corners there. Still, it is pretty central and connected with 1st district through U1. Favoritenstraße is also ok for shopping.

10th district is very diverse, it has less safe areas, but also pretty nice areas. Meininger Hostel is located in one of the better areas of 10th district, 10-15 mins walk from Südbahnhof, 2 mins to the tube which takes you to Karlsplatz/Opera in 5 mins. There isn't much night life around the hostel, although there are a couple of nice cafes at Columbusplatz and quite a few restaurants/kebab shops in Favoritenstrasse. My advice is that this seems like a safe and reasonable choice of hostel, but don't waste your time in 10th district. The neighbour district, 4th, has great cafes and bars. Personally, I don't like walking alone across Südtiroler Platz/Gürtel (between city centre and the hostel) after midnight. Take the tube or a taxi back to the hostel. Taxi is quite cheap.
