International standards and local flavour
Location is always important, but on some occasions it is especially so. For instance when I had only a night and a few hours to spend in Vienna, so I wanted to be in the city centre, but with easy access to the airport. This hotel happens to be near the downtown station of the express train from the airport (the CAT) so this was my reason for choosing it, together with the fact that I trust the quality of Mercure hotels.
Unique Quality: I found all the qualities I expected from a 4-stars Mercure, but here I found something more! The architecture, the furniture and decoration are true to the hotel's name, and the atmosphere was genuine 19th Century Vienna, but with 21st Century amenities too.
Another aspect that I have liked very much is that my room was a decent size, a quality that is not frequently found in the hotels of old Europe.

The best/and cheapest **** Hotel in Vienna > Hotel BIEDERMEIER
Located in a quiet revitalised Biedermeier passage in the heart of Vienna, the atmosphere of the place is permeated by the culture of the old Vienna. The hotel is harmoniously integrated into the protected, car-free Biedermeier area in the heart of Vienna, surrounded by a dazzling array of restaurants and taverns, which represents a city full of love and the joy of life.
It is only a few mintues walk from St. Stephan cathedral, underground and bus stop nearby and the International airport is about 20 minutes drive away.
The Mercure Biedermeier Hotel features 203 well appointed bedrooms and suites decorated in a classic style and all with up to date facilities.
You can try the hotel's restaurant serving regional cuisine in elegant decor or the terrace offering International specialties
There is a traditional beer pub where you can relax and enjoy drinks or meet some friends.

The house was built in 1817 in the time of the Biedermeier and follows this classical Viennese era with it's charm and elegance.

I was also wondering what is the best way to get from the airport, as the holiday doesnt include transfer. Any ideas? What is the best way to get around too? Public transport good?

I think the best hotel with really resonable price is HILTON in exact centre of everything in Wien - www.hilton.com - address: Am Stadtpark 3.
Second one is almost next to Hilton - Mercure Grand Hotel Biedermeier Wien inside the chain - www.dorint.com address: Landstraßer Hauptstraße 28 .
I tried both of them , if you like to try austrian climate - the choice is BIDERMAIER!

Transport in Wien from airport to Centre is so easy!
You must take a rapid train called CAT - around 7 EUR, and after 15 minutes you will get a first stop - HILTON , Am Stadtpark 3

Your Hotel is a good choice :)
@ transfer:
1) CAT is okay ... but then you are at 3th district .......... more cheap (and a better way to the 8th district ;) would be: Take any TRAIN to "Handelskai" and then the metro "U6" to "Alserstrasse" from there you have a tram called "43". This costs you around 6 euro.
If you want an easy way, reserve a taxi ... e.g. here: http://www.ck-airportservice.at/ - maybe write them an email for english information ;) email: office@ck-airportservice.at - they cost 29,-Euro for up to 4 persons.
you have a very nic e district and a tipp from me: go to "Old AKH" this is the old hospital located at the corner Spitalgasse/Alserstrasse ... there are some restaurants inside, very nice&green if the weather gets better ... and in wintertime there's a christmas market too :)

I agree with heksli, except C&K is bankrupt (still running, but with problems). If you want to use taxi there are at the airport 2 taxicounters (one in green), if you ask for a "Vienna Taxi" it will be €30 at the green counter and a similar price at the other.
